When celebrities have a wedding to plan, the most nerve-wracking decision has to be in finding the perfect dress to wear. We’ve seen them in idyllic and traditional gowns, but we’re more interested in when the rich and famous choose to leave behind bridal traditions and wear something a little unexpected.
We’ve found a surprising collection of famous faces that refused to look like a typical bride. Whether it’s an eccentric color, a daring silhouette, or not a dress at all, these wedding outfits are unusual and one-of-a-kind. Take a look at what atypical look these stars chose to wear on their special day.
Dita Von Teese’s Violet Ensemble
She’s an American burlesque dancer, businesswoman, model, and fashion designer with a love for vintage designs. Dita Von Teese, AKA the Queen of Burlesque, definitely tapped into her unconventional tastes for her wedding to rockstar Marilyn Manson in 2005. We’ve never seen a dress like it. Her gown was a shocking bright violet color made in a synthetic taffeta fabric.
It was designed by Vivienne Westwood and featured an extremely tiny waist as Dita wanted to wear a real corset on her big day. She had the famed corset-maker Mr. Pearl make a custom creation to give her the smallest possible waistline. She’s pictured with Christian Louboutin, who designed her shoes for the big day. She gave the classic wedding gown a punky upgrade.
Emily Ratajkowski’s Mustard Two-Piece
Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski might have had her break in Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” music video, but she’s been a famous face in Hollywood ever since. She married her boyfriend Sebastian Bear-McClard, an actor and producer, after only a few weeks of dating in a surprise New York courthouse ceremony. Here they are pictured at the courthouse.
Emily chose to forgo the wedding dress altogether. Not wanting any of the fuss or stress that comes with planning a “special day,” she threw on a mustard-yellow Zara pantsuit and black fedora hat. She happily exclaimed, “I was not a Pinterest bride!” adding, “I do so much glam, I do fittings once a week so for me it was just so nice to throw on a Zara suit that I loved [and] do my own hair and make-up. I always feel the most confident when I do it myself.”
Keira Knightley’s Ballerina Bodice
If people thought about English actress Keira Knightley getting married, they probably expected her wedding day to be a glamorous and star-studded affair. It was anything like that in reality, as she married Klaxons musician James Righton, pictured, in a super-private ceremony in the South of France. There were only 11 guests in attendance!
It wasn’t just the wedding that was low-key. Keira opted for a light grey Chanel mini dress in tulle fabric, which she had been pictured in previously at various red carpet events. The star didn’t even buy herself a new gown, preferring instead to recycle an old favorite. Now that’s unconventional.
Kat Von D’s Cherry Red Fantasy Frock
Tattoo-artist and cosmetics CEO Kat Von D is the famous female tattoo artist who used to appear on the reality show LA Ink. But she’s since moved onto bigger things, having founded her own makeup line, Kat Von D Beauty. In 2018, she married goth musician Rafael Reyes, pictured, in the most glamorous gothic event we’ve possibly ever seen.
Kat Von D wore a striking scarlet red gown that tied in nicely with their wedding theme, “in life and in death.” It matched perfectly with the whole event, which was colored entirely in red. But the dress shocked the guests with more than just the dye job. It was Victorian in style, features several layers and ruffles, a tall collar piece, and pointed shoulder pads!
Steph Claire Smith’s Bridal Bralette
Australian fitness model and Instagram influencer Steph Claire Smith showcased the tan that saw her become the face of Bondi Sands at her wedding last year. She married her high school sweetheart and current-day business partner Josh Miller in Victoria, Australia – the same place that he proposed.
There aren’t many people that would walk down the aisle in a bandeau crop top/skirt combo, but then again most of us don’t have the body of a fitness model. While it was unconventional, she told her Instagram followers that it was “the wedding dress of my dreams… it’s SO ME and I love it so much.” In this picture, she poses with two of her friends at the reception.
Jackie O’s Gypsy Gown
You don’t have to be a Hollywood superstar with a limitless budget to go over the top on your wedding day. Just ask Australian radio host Jackie O and British photographer Lee Henderson (pictured) who went for matching pink and white outfits when they renewed their vows in 2012.
Jackie was hard to miss in her huge princess gown. It looks like she asked for every girly feature imaginable to be added on, resulting in her looking like a costumed actor at Disneyland. Celebrities don’t usually opt for a gypsy-wedding style gown, but we’re starting to wish they would do more often.
Avril Lavigne’s Smoky Ensemble
Canadian-born pop singer Avril Lavigne started dating Nickelback frontman and fellow Canadian Chad Kroeger back in 2012. They were collaborating together when passions arose and found themselves engaged within a month. The wedding took place in a reconstructed medieval castle in the South of France, and she was walked down the aisle by her father, pictured.
And the edgy pop star wanted to stay true to her image by opting for a rather unlikely wedding gown color. She chose a jet black tulle for her Monique Lhuillier dress and accented it with black roses, a black veil, and an extremely dense smokey eye. Definitely one of the more eerie designs we’ve seen.
Mia Farrow’s Stylish Skirt Suit
People were quite shocked when actress Mia Farrow married singer Frank Sinatra, pictured, in 1966. She was a 21-year-old former church girl while Frank was a 50-year-old Las Vegas legend. It didn’t last long, with Mia declaring in hindsight that she was an “impossibly immature teenager,” but the pair remained on good terms and stayed friends for the rest of Frank’s life.
She even displayed some of that rebellious spirit on her wedding day in June, where she wore a simple white skirt suit instead of a traditional wedding dress. She had also recently chopped off her hair and rocked the pixie cut which was also a rebellious style for the sixties. The Rosemary’s Baby star was hardly interested in keeping with traditions.
Lydia Hearst’s Blushing Petticoat
American model, actress, and lifestyle blogger Lydia Hearst comes from a famous family, as she’s the great-granddaughter of newspaper publisher and politician William Randolph Hearst. In 2016, she married stand-up comedian and podcast host Chris Hardwick in Pasadena, California (pictured).
They had a magical ceremony and reception, so it was just as well that Lydia had a magical dress to match. Her Christian Siriano beaded gown looked as if it was dip-dyed in rosewater, as it featured a unique and romantic pink ombre. To top it off, she donned antique hairpins and custom bejeweled Stuart Weitzman sandals.
Solange’s Plunging Jumpsuit
American singer Solange Knowles isn’t the only talented performer in her family. She’s come a long way since she was a backup dancer for older sister Beyonce in Destiny’s Child, winning awards of her own for her solo music career. In 2014, she married music video director Alan Ferguson, pictured, in a strikingly minimalist ceremony in New Orleans.
Solange wore a stylish off white jumpsuit – hardly typical wedding attire. To add to it’s eccentricities, it feature a long and draping cape as well as a plunging neckline. It seems as though she wanted to feel like a female superhero on her big day, and we can’t think of anything more empowering.
Tamara Ecclestone’s Frilly Mini Dress
She’s a model, socialite, and daughter to the extremely wealthy former chief executive of the Formula One Group Bernie Ecclestone. Tamara Ecclestone is a billionaire heiress who had a lavish $8.5 million celebration for her marriage to businessman Jay Rutland, pictured. Surprisingly, for her actually wedding in a registry office, she wore a very simple mini dress.
She married the Brit in a registry office in Chelsea – an exclusive and high-end part of London. It was July of 2013 when they officially tied the knot, and Tamara left the building looking surprisingly casual. She wore a simple strappy mini dress in a nude/cream color, with the only “wedding” feature being the frills along the hem.
Mama June’s Camo-Print Smock
June Shannon aka Mama June became world-famous when she appeared in the TLC TV series Toddlers & Tiaras, alongside her beauty pageant competing daughter “Honey Boo Boo.” Fans of the hilarious family will have been glad to see that Mama June finally tied the knot with her long-time beau “Sugar Bear” back in 2013, wearing a surprising ensemble. Here, she is pictured with her betrothed and her famous daughter.
Her wedding dress was made up in a very unusual camouflage-print – the first of it’s kind that we’ve seen! To top it off, it had a bright orange underlayer and waist ribbon to match with her fiance’s tangerine waistcoat. Even her bouquet defied convention; they were rainbow-dyed roses. We’ll give it to Mama June that we’ve never seen a wedding getup like it.
Lady Mary Charteris’s Revealing Garb
Lady Mary Charteris may be a British fashion model, but it still came as a shock when she walked down the aisle in 2012. She’s the daughter of James Charteris, the 13th Earl of Wemyss and 9th Earl of March, who has had an especially “proper” upbringing. She obviously wanted to wear something completely unexpected for her wedding day.
She chose this barely-there tulle and silk gown designed by Pam Hogg to wear for her nuptials to rock singer Robbie Furze in 2012 (pictured). It was a star-studded affair at her family’s estate, Stanway House, in Gloucestershire. How many social elites have you seen get married in transparent panels with a mermaid-style tutu train?
Poppy Delevingne’s Boho Masterpiece
When model Poppy Delevingne married former model James Cook in 2014, her guests hardly expected to hear they were having another wedding in Morocco a few days later. Her wedding dress at her first wedding to James was couture Chanel, but her second dress to the same guy was completely different.
Poppy sprung for a floral fantasy creation by designer Peter Dundas, which featured a plunging neckline and clusters of hand-embroidered pastel flowers. It’s the boho trend turned up a notch for someone who wanted to wear a wedding dress that their inner child would be proud of. Here she is pictured with her famous sister, Cara Delevingne.
Shenae Grimes’s Ghoulish Gown
You wouldn’t have expected the star of TV show 90210 to wear black to her wedding day, but it happened. Shenae Grimes got engaged to British model and musician Josh Beech (pictured) back in 2012 after only nine months of dating. Today, they’re blissfully happy with their baby daughter and first child.
She may have chosen an unusual color to say her “I do’s,” but she nonetheless stuck with trusted bridal designer Vera Wang. It had a deep V-neck design and a chiffon grey and black skirt that layered over each other creating a gorgeous smokey effect. She looks as though she could have starred as a Disney villain, but a glamorous one at that.
BC Jean’s Jewellery Draping
American husband-wife rock duo Alexander Jean (pictured) who first met in 2012, became a proper music duo in 2015 before tying the knot the following year. You might remember them for their hit single “Roses and Violets,” or for the song “If I Were A Boy” which was sung by Beyonce, but written by BC Jean.
They celebrated their nuptials by hosting a three-day affair with BC Jean, aka Brittany Jean Carlson, donning an extravagant nude and white mermaid-style dress. She had her outfit very heavily bedecked in jewels, even all the way down her legs. And the cherry on the cake was her matching sparkling headpiece that looked more like a huge piece of jewelry.
Kaley Cuoco’s Lace Jumpsuit
The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco married her equestrian beau Karl Cook (pictured) back in 2017 after a brief period of dating. Both being serious horse lovers, they had a lot to bond overer. And it’s ultimately what made their decision to have their wedding on a ranch all the more easy.
She wore a stunning lace Reem Acra gown for her ceremony, before changing into this matching jumpsuit for the after party. But she couldn’t resist giving her ceremony dress a bit of an edge – she made a custom wedding cape in the same lace fabric to go along with it. We love her use of a classic bridal material in a modern silhouette!
Tina Turner’s Green Grandeur
Singing legend Tina Turner aka “The Queen of Rock and Roll” certainly turned heads during her wedding to German actor and producer Erwin Bach, pictured. They met back in 1986, fell in love, and after 27 years of being together decided it was time to tie the knot! In 2013, they finally said their vows to one another on the banks of Lake Zurich, Switzerland.
Tina first laid eyes on the green taffeta and black silk tulle dress during an Armani fashion show in Beijing. She told herself “I gotta have that, even if I never wear it. Then I thought, ‘I know, that will be my wedding dress!'” On top of the dramatic skirt, the dress was embellished with Swarovski crystals on the bodice and on the legs. That’s right – Tina wore a glamorous set of matching leggings to her wedding.
Sabine Ghanem’s Hooded Getup
When society girl and jewelry designer Sabine Ghanem got engaged to financier Joseph Getty (pictured) people knew there was going to be a celebration to remember. And they were right; the couple wed in Rome, and after hosting a costume party in a palace for friends and family, took the guests to one of the oldest members’ clubs around.
Sabine’s ceremony dress was a haute couture Maison Lesage creation where the traditional veil was replaced with a hooded cloak. The dress, cloak, and her custom Charlotte Olympia heels sported stunning gold sequins and embroidery of sun motifs. The dress itself was a stiff column design that was off-the-shoulder. Sabine definitely snapped up a show stopper.
Denise Richards’ Skimpy Playsuit
Actress and model Denise Richards married entrepreneurial hunk Aaron Phyper (pictured) in 2018, after a whirlwind romance that started less than a year before. And in keeping with their swiftly moving relationship, they only announced their engagement two days before the wedding.
On top of that, The Real Housewives of Beverley Hills star only gave designer Mark Zunino 24 hours to create her wedding attire. Perhaps that’s also why they opted for such a short length, as it’s far less material than we’re used to seeing for a bride. She wore a strapless, mini romper in floral lace paired with a sheer skirt overlay – a real beach bride look.
Liberty Ross’s Vintage Black Drapery
Nobody expected English model Liberty Ross and American music mogul Jimmy Iovine (pictured) to be as daring as they were on their wedding day. They gave the day a theme: Valentine’s Day goth. The February 14th event had a strict dress code where the female attendees had to wear red, while Jimmy wore a navy velvet tuxedo.
Liberty rocked a vintage Givenchy gown in black lace accompanied by the elaborate stylings of designer Stephen Jones. Instead of a tiara, she donned a tall, sculptural headpiece and a black veil, so there was no mistaking whose day it was! And her classic red lipstick added just the right pop of color.
Malin Akerman’s Blush-Toned Beach Look
You’ll recognize Swedish-Canadian actress Malin Akerman from films such as The Heartbreak Kid, 27 Dresses, and Watchmen, among a series of romantic comedies. Her big day came in 2018, where she got to marry the love of her life and fellow actor Jack Donnelly.
Instead of the typical white or ivory colored dresses, Malin punched for something a little different. She settled on this Cushnie dress in a pale millenial pink tone, and interestingly, decided not to wear any shoes whatsoever. “I’ve worn many Cushnie pieces to events and have always felt so chic and cool in their stuff,” she explained to Vogue. It’s no wonder she could rely on them.
Helen Mirren’s Stiff Shoulder Pads
English actress Helen Mirren married American film director Taylor Hackford (pictured) back in 1997, despite having vowed in her youth to never marry. Now, they’ve been together for over 20 years, and Helen still recalls her special day as being “incredible” and a “wonderful experience.”
However, she didn’t let go of her rebellious streak just because she was getting married. She chose not to wear something typically feminine or white for her wedding day, choosing instead to suit up in a stiff but beautifully embroidered high collar jacket and copper-toned taffeta skirt. Since they married in a Scottish castle, Taylor opted for a kilt.
Alison Pill’s Mellow Yellow Frock
Alison Pill is the former child actress who appeared in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Midnight in Paris, and American Horror Story: Cult. She married American actor and writer Joshua Leonard (pictured) in May 2015, after a brief four-month-long engagement. But she didn’t stick to bridal tradition with her outfit.
Alison went for a very unusual lemonade yellow vintage pinafore for the low-key celebration. She didn’t want to the angelic look, but rather bright and cheerful color mixed with her love of vintage fashion. She paired a bold red lip and a grey smokey eye with her retro style before dancing the night away.
Hanne Gaby Odiele’s Threadbare Fantasy
Fashion models Hanne Gaby Odiele and John Swiatek (pictured) went to upstate New York in 2016 to celebrate their love and commitment. They had their wedding in the great outdoors with the trees and rolling hills as their backdrop. And considering fashion designer Alexander Wang is a close and personal friend, she managed to get him to design her dream outfit.
She went a very unconventional route for her outfit, which consisted of ivory cargo pants, a silk bralette, and a bizarrely cut lace overlay. She also had a fantastical hooded cape in silk that she wore for the ceremony, making her look like a fashion-forward little red riding hood.
Cilla Black’s Red Velvet Delight
Cilla Black was the English singer turned dating show host who was close friends with The Beatles. She was married to British songwriter Bobby Willis (pictured) for three decades until his death in 1999. And if it wasn’t already obvious from how Cilla was dressed, they had their wedding in 1969.
Her dress of choice has gone down in British history as one of the most iconic wedding dresses. It was a deep red crushed velvet mini dress in a ’60s mod design that featured large and billowy sleeves. It’s said that you shouldn’t wear red if you have red hair. But we think Cilla nailed this alternative wedding look.
Dianna Agron’s Nude-Toned Marvel
You’ll remember actress and dancer Dianna Agron as Jessica Grant from CSI: NY or as Quinn Fabray in Glee. She married the lead guitarist of British folk-rock band Mumford & Sons in 2016, pictured on the right, traveling to the Moroccan desert for her glamorous destination wedding. They are pictured with their friend on the left.
Dianna pulled out all the stops for her $20,500 Valentino dress, opting for nude chiffon instead of your typical white. The sheer material was weighed down by heavy jewel embellishments that were scattered all around the dress, from the high collar to the hemline. Her headpiece was also an atypical crown of suspended silver stars. Totally original.
Kristen Bell’s Laid Back Look
Actors Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard (pictured) both grew up in the northern suburbs of Detroit and, after having met at a party, started dating in 2007. After becoming engaged in 2010, they asserted that they wouldn’t formally tie the knot until same-sex marriage was legalized. When it did become legal in 2013 Kristen proposed to Dax, and luckily he accepted.
Kristen was on another level of indifference that we frankly aspire to. She donned a simple black T-shirt and loose-fitting pants, dressing it up only with a pair of peep-toe heels and a statement necklace. Her and Dax share a laid-back attitude to marriage in general, having said: “the state having a piece of paper doesn’t mean he’s going to be nice to me and by my side for the rest of my life… that is going to be evidenced by how we treat each other and the commitment that we make.”
Gwen Stefani’s Hot Pink Touch
By the time pop star Gwen Stefani married singer Gavin Rossdale, they had already experienced a break up with each other and dated other people, before reconciling once more. They married in 2002 at London’s Covent Garden, with Gwen turning up fashionably late to the ceremony by an hour. Here she is pictured with her father, who walked her down the aisle.
She was worth the wait, though. She stepped out in a splendid Christian Dior creation that had a particular edge to it. The bottom of the gown was a dip-dyed hot pink (that had actually been hand-painted) that made fans nostalgic for her colorful No Doubt days. And the veil held a secret, too: it was vintage.
Portia De Rossi’s Blushing Ballet Skirt
Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia De Rossi (pictured) got hitched in 2008 in their shared Beverly Hills home. There were only 19 guests in attendance, and the public had only known about their wedding three months before the date when Ellen revealed it on her show. They wanted it to be a private affair.
They didn’t let the fact that it was a small affair get in the way of them planning their dream outfits, though. Both Ellen and Portia turned to Zac Posen to design their wedding ensembles. But they still didn’t see each other’s final product until the big day. Portia looked like a princess in her light pink halter dress with a tulle skirt, while Ellen rocked a crisp white three-piece suit.
Jessica Biel’s Fuschia Frock
Singer Justin Timberlake (pictured) had a string of well-publicized relationships with famous women before he met actress Jessica Biel. They started dating at the start of 2007 and by the end of 2011, were engaged. They had a destination wedding in 2012 at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy, where it was a strictly black-tie event.
Jessica didn’t intend on wearing pink initially: “I have never been crazy about all-white wedding dresses… [Giambattista Valli] had created that same fabric in a fuchsia-and-pink combination for a dress in a previous collection, and I asked him if he could create that same pattern in a white combination, and he suggested pink. It was a bit of a leap of faith at the time, but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined.” When in doubt, trust the designer!
Sarah Jessica Parker’s Off the Rack Regret
Introduced to actor Matthew Broderick (pictured) by one of her brothers, actress Sarah Jessica Parker married him in 1997, in a Manhattan ceremony officiated by his sister. But the wedding came as a surprise to family and friends, who the couple had told they were throwing a regular party. Even more shockingly, the trend-setter, “Never thought about a wedding dress. Never. Had not one daydream about it.”
She defied expectations and wore a black Morgane Le Fay gown that she, surprisingly, came to regret over time. “I just was too embarrassed to spend any time looking for a wedding dress. There was a store that I liked that I knew, and I just went and got whatever they had hanging.” Sarah admits that “Now, I would do it differently.” Look at the bright side; at least it’s not the husband she regrets!
Rita Wilson’s Church Mini Skirt
Actors Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks (pictured) first met in 1981 but didn’t get to know each other properly until chance threw them together again in 1985. In 1988 they finally married, after Tom underwent a Greek Orthodox conversion for her. Both of them continue to uphold their faith to this day.
Rita may have had her ceremony in a Greek Orthodox Church, but that wasn’t going to stop her from changing into a mini skirt immediately after the ceremony! Her floor length floral dress converted into a mini cocktail dress with out-there ruffle details and a revealing bust. You’ve got to love a two-in-one product.
Mandy Moore’s Dusty Rose Dress
American actress and singer Mandy Moore and Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith (pictured) started dating in 2015. Two years later, they were engaged, eventually tying the knot in 2018 at Mandy’s Los Angeles home. They knew they wanted the wedding to be a “non-traditional” affair with a “bohemian vibe,” and carefully planning ensured it was everything they dreamed of.
Mandy got a custom ’70s-inspired Rodarte gown made for her in a dusty pink color. It was in a tulle material and featured delicate embroidery on both the gown and veil. We love how they managed to combine a vintage style with romantic ruffles in a dress that still looks contemporary. It’s tastefully girly.
Sharon Tate’s Lemon Minidress
American actress Sharon Tate married film director Roman Polanski in January 1968 at a London registry office. She looked like the quintessential ’60s wild child with her lemon-colored wedding dress, refusing to adhere to a conventional bridal look on her big day. They were so rebellious, they even had their reception at The Playboy Club in central London.
Her pastel yellow minidress wasn’t long like most bridal gowns. It was made of taffeta and designed by Sharon herself, and complimented her long blonde locks perfectly. Her eye makeup was big and bold, as was the fashion of the day, and her hair was laced with flower decorations. We love the contrast between the long sleeves and high neck with the short length of the dress.
Marz Lovejoy Was a Bridal Umbrella
Model, singer, and writer Marz Lovejoy didn’t think she’d find true love. But once she did, she knew she’d want to celebrate it with a bang. And that’s exactly what she did in 2017 with her beau Simon Rasmussen, a magazine editor. They got married at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in a small and private event.
It was created by designers Paul Cupo, Miki Horii, and Twan Meijerink, with the idea of the mermaid-style dress coming from “a small image found in an old wedding magazine.” But the shocking cage-like veil was inspired by the New York socialite Susanne Bartsch’s wedding veil back in 1995. It’s exactly as it seems: loud, bizarre, and a fabulous statement piece.
Judy Garland’s Picture Perfect Poncho
Actress, singer, and dancer Judy Garland married musician Mickey Deans, pictured, just three months before she passed away. It was 1969, and they were wed at the same registry office in Chelsea, London, as Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski the year before. As you can see, the mirror behind the happy couple is the same as the mirror Sharon Tate poses next to in her yellow minidress.
Her bridal style definitely competed with Sharon’s. She also wore a minidress but opted for a bright blue color instead. Over the top of it, she wore a poncho with a feathered collar and sleeves, all in the same color. Even her heels were the same shade. She had a pop of red on her lips to balance the ensemble.
Katie Price’s Exposing Beach Dress
It was definitely all eyes on British glamor model Katie Price when she married former stripper Kieran Hayler, pictured, in 2013. They chose to tie the know in a beachfront ceremony in the Bahamas, at the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort and Spa. But they didn’t have long to plan for it – Kieran had proposed only two weeks prior to the big day.
Perhaps that’s why Katie looks like she only has half a dress; it might have taken too long to make the rest. She wore a low-cut minidress that featured an extended train and a back cut-out. She also donned a tiara in her and miniature veil, completing the look. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but it is original!
Paula Yates’ Long, Crimson Gown
British television presenter and rock music journalist Paula Yates married Irish singer Bob Geldof in 1986 after having spent 10 years together. When they first met Paula had been an obsessive fan of Bob Geldof’s band The Boomtown Rats, and officially became his girlfriend after flying out to Paris to surprise him one day.
Paula was wearing a bright red wedding dress that had an incredibly long train. It featured flower embroidery on the chest and was made in satin, with a matching extended veil to boot. It definitely lived up to their rock and roll image, complete with David Bowie in attendance, pictured on the right. Here, the couple poses alongside close friends and family.
Isabel Roth’s See-Through Smock
Horse showjumper and member of the famous Rothstein family, Isabel Roth had her wedding to Jake Stein, the president of film and theater production company Def Pictures, back in 2017 (pictured). They had a gorgeous celebration in Puglia, Italy, attended by their many wealthy and influential friends.
In many ways Isabel’s dress was classic and conventional, but one feature in particular made it excitingly daring. The lower half of the dress was extremely sheer, so much so that you could clearly see the bride’s bare legs! Apart from the lace overlay, there were a couple of blurry panels placed to protect the bride’s modesty. But we still think this Reem Acra gown is an incredibly brave choice.
Elizabeth Taylor’s Emerald Ensemble
British-American actress Elizabeth Taylor married American singer Eddie Fisher (pictured) in 1959, making it her fourth wedding. He was best friends with her recently deceased third husband, producer Mike Todd, and they married the year following his passing. They chose to have a small ceremony in Las Vegas.
Elizabeth wore an iconic green silk dress that had long, sheer sleeves and a matching hood. Funnily enough, she was known for wearing light and pale tones a lot of the time; perhaps that’s why she opted for this deep emerald dress for her wedding. It looked stunning with her pink lipstick and bright blue eyes.
Kandi Burruss’ Ostrich-Feather Masterpiece
The Real Housewives Of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss married her best friend Todd Tucker in 2014 in a lavish Atlanta ceremony. “The whole thing was like a fairy tale!” she reminisces, which we can clearly see from the picture. Guests were asked to adhere to a strict color code, so the whole event was planned to perfection. They actually took inspiration from the ’80s film Coming To America in designing their big day.
Kandi pulled off her custom Reco Chapple dress beautifully, but it didn’t come cheap. It cost $20,000 and consisted of a skin-toned mesh with heavy embellishment. In fact, it was almost completely covered in jewels, except for the dramatic 12-foot long ostrich feather train. It really was an eye-popping outfit choice.
Celine Dion’s Golden Gown
Canadian singer Celine Dion quite literally reflected off the walls for her and husband-manager Rene Angelil’s wedding vow renewal in January 2000. To mark five happy years as a couple, they went to Vegas to hold a symbolic Melkite Byzantine ceremony in the famous Ceasars Palace.
Celine channeled her inner Cleopatra in this gold and sequin gown. Note the long, draping sleeves and off-shoulder design that gracefully reveals the top of her shoulders. Both her and Rene wore matching gold crowns, which complimented the gold embroidery in his traditional ensemble. They couldn’t have looked more majestic.
Siobhan Fahey’s Floral Frock
Irish Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey and Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, pictured, married in 1987, and spent nine years together as a married couple. They chose to have their wedding in Normandy, at a rented chateau, and in a small and intimate ceremony.
Siobhan got a lot of criticism for her unusual wedding dress design. It featured several flowers from the top to the bottom, with her even wearing a cute flower crown to match. As for the dress itself, it was frilly and multilayered and matched the groom’s white getup. And even Dave wore a little flower on his lapel!
Phillipa Coan’s Cream Cocktail Dress
British actor Jude Law, pictured, married behavioral psychologist, Dr. Phillipa Coan, in 2019. It was a private affair with a modest number of guests, which they had chosen not to share with the world. In fact, they had also chosen not to share it with their showbiz friends, opting to make it as low-key as possible.
Phillipa chose to forgo a bridal look completely in this unconventional short cocktail dress. It had a ruffled front and long sleeves and honestly looks incredibly comfortable to wear. Jude looked a little unusual himself, as he was wearing a dark blue velvet suit and fedora hat. We love how low maintenance they went for their big day.
Rita Hayworth In Periwinkle Blue
Iconic actress Rita Hayworth married Prince Aly Khan in the spring of 1949. She had left behind her successful film career in order to marry him, and therefore received a high amount of publicity on her wedding day. It became the first time in history that a Hollywood actress had officially become a princess.
Rita’s eggshell blue wedding dress was designed by Jacques Fath, and was a far cry from the usual wedding day attire you would have expected in the forties. It had a simple design up top and a pleated skirt, with a matching blue hat in place of a veil. Rita dressed entirely more casual than people had expected a Golden Age actress to dress.
Whitney Port’s Best of Both World’s
Former The Hills actress Whitney Port wed producer Tim Rosenman in California’s Palm Springs back in 2015. Having been together since 2012, they chose to have the wedding at a bowling alley because of Tim’s love of the sport. There were guests of course, but for Whitney, it felt “as if no one else was there.” All her attention was on him.
Whitney wanted the best of both worlds on her wedding day. Instead of picking either a short or long length for the skirt, she found a way to make it business in the front and party in the back. But it took her some time to land on a decision: “I had so many different ideas and visions for what I wanted. It took me trying on a ton of dresses and doing a lot of pinteresting to figure out what I was really looking for.”
Victoria Beckham’s Amythyst Apparel
The Spice Girls member turned successful fashion designer Victoria Beckham married her footballer beau David Beckham in 1999. They held a destination wedding in Dublin, Ireland, opting for an actual castle as their venue. Victoria was truly living up to her Spice Girls nickname, Posh Spice.
Victoria wore a strapless Vera Wang gown in ivory satin for the ceremony but wanted something more out-there for her reception. She had herself, David, and their baby boy Brooklyn (pictured) wear matching royal purple satin outfits. Her dress also featured a red inner lining, just to get it that extra pop of color. It was definitely a unique wedding look.
Natalie Wood is Mellow in Yellow
Actress Natalie Wood is famous for having had two marriages to the same person; actor Robert Wagner. They first married in 1957, split up, and resumed their life together in 1972. But in between her first and third marriages, she was married to British producer Richard Gregson, pictured, in 1969.
Instead of wearing something white or cream, Natalie wanted to wear a happy yellow colored dress instead. It was full-lengthed and textured, and she paired it with a hippie-style flower crown. And instead of a bridal veil, she had white and yellow ribbons attached to her headpiece to fall around her hair.
Julianne Moore Is a Mother in Mauve
Actress Julianne Moore married writer and director Bart Freundlich in Greenwich Village, New York City, back in 2003. She had already given birth to their son Caleb and daughter Liv, who she is pictured holding here. It was definitely the right move for her, as she has said “we have a very solid family life, and it is the most satisfying thing I have ever done.”
Julianne went for a casual look for her wedding day. She wore a mauve colored silk dress that almost looked like a slip. With it she wore bright green heels, a matching handbag, and excessively long green earrings that went past her shoulder. She had no interest in keeping up with bridal fashion for her happy day.
Raquel Welch Is Cute in Crochet
Take a look at American actress Raquel Welch on her wedding day to Hollywood producer Patrick Curtis, pictured, in February 1967. They got married in Paris, France, and remained together for the following five years. It was her second marriage, having first married her high school sweetheart in 1959.
Someone as beautiful as Raquel Welch hardly needs to make an effort to be a stunning bride. She was laid back on her wedding day, opting for a simple and elegant crochet minidress. She wore a fur coat overtop and long white gloves to dress it up a bit, but we think she hardly needed it.
Whitney Houston’s Ceremony Crown
29-year-old singing legend Whitney Houston married 23-year-old Bobby Brown, pictured, in front of 800 guests back in 1992. Whitney’s New Jersey estate seemed like the perfect place to celebrate their three-year-long relationship, having had met for the first time at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989 and hitting it off.
We’re in love with Whitney’s choice of hairstyle for her wedding day. She went for a special bridal headpiece that crowned her face perfectly. It was a bead and sequin cloche piece that matched her classic Marc Bouwer gown, which was said to have cost her $40,000 at the time. A flawless feminine look.
Nancy Shevell’s Understated Ensemble
Former Beatles member Sir Paul McCartney, pictured, started dating the American heiress Nancy Shevell in 2007, eventually marrying in London in 2011. Will all their fortune between them, it was expected that Nancy would step out in an ultra-glamorous bridal gown on her wedding day. But that wasn’t the case.
Nancy wore a simple and understated knee-length dress that had barely any embellishments. It was still a couture dress of course, having actually been designed by Paul’s fashion designer daughter Stella McCartney. It was long-sleeved, high-necked, and really quite plain. No bells or whistles here.
Emma Thompson’s Colorful Costume
British actress Emma Thompson’s first marriage was to Harry Potter actor and director Kenneth Branagh, pictured. They were dubbed the “golden couple” by the British tabloids, and appeared in many movies together. This is them in 1989 on their wedding day, with Emma looking especially out of place.
Emma’s eccentric personality is fully expressed in her wedding outfit. It was knee-length and floral, with bright pink, green, yellow, and blue patterns set against a white background. She had tulle shoulders and sleeves that matched the feathered wedding hat she wore on the day. She’s pretty much as one-of-a-kind as they come!
Sophie Turner’s Fuss-Free Jumpsuit
Actress Sophie Turner had been dating singer/songwriter Joe Jonas since 2016. Following the Billboard Music Awards in May 2019, the couple proceeded to have a surprise wedding in Las Vegas. With the two other Jonas brothers acting as witnesses, they tied the knot to an officiating Elvis Presley impersonator!
Sophie chose to wear an effortlessly chic jumpsuit for the occasion in an off-white color and satin material. That way, it was incredibly comfortable and easy, but still had an element of bridal design. Since it wasn’t fitted or too figure-hugging, the bride looked happily laid-back and relaxed.
Marilyn Monroe’s Black Skirt-Suit
1950s Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe married retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio in a civil wedding ceremony in San Francisco, 1954. It was a stormy relationship that received a lot of attention from the press and the public alike. Joe is known for having held onto his devotion to Marilyn throughout the rest of his life.
Marilyn surprised everyone when she stepped out in a black two-piece skirt-suit. Despite being best known in an icon white dress, she forewent the typical bridal gown and opted for somethign dark and casual. Considering she wouldn’t have been able to go undercover on her wedding day, we really wonder why she chose something so unusual!
Agyness Deyn’s Fairytale-Inspired Frock
British model and actress Agyness Deyn married her hedge fund manager boyfriend Joel McAndrew in 2016. She had previously been married to actor Giovanni Ribisi right up until 2015 but had only lasted three years. For her second wedding, she and Joel chose to wed in Brooklyn Heights.
She had her unique dress created for her by English designer Molly Goddard. Known for her fairytale style dress, she pulled together this ivory gown that had a hint of green and a peachy pink underlayer. The bodice featured subtle metallic turquoise accents, which matched Agnes’ blue Manolo Blahnik heels. So cute.
Sofia Coppola Is Lovely in Lavender
American Director and daughter of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola married musician Thomas Mars in 2011. It was her second marriage, and they surprised no one in choosing Italy to tie the knot. She had previously been married to director Spike Jonze.
Sofia didn’t care about adhering to any bridal traditions when it came to her wedding dress. She wore a lilac chiffon dress by designer Azzedine Alaia, who had shown the design in a fashion show a few months prior. Instead of going to the hassle of creating a one-off, she chose to wear something off the rack.
Britney Spears Is Racy and Lacy
Teen pop icon Britney Spears wed rapper and model Kevin Earl Federline, in 2004 after a whirlwind romance. They had become engaged after just three months of dating and received intense media coverage of their relationship all the while. They chose to have a nondenominational ceremony in Studio City, California.
Britney has hardly ever been considered shy, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that she wore a Monique Lhuillier micro mini dress on her wedding day. It was a lacy number that from the top up, didn’t look too out of the ordinary. But once you got below the waist, you saw that that’s pretty much where the dress ends.
Zosia Mamet’s Cocktail Dress
Star of the hit TV show Girls, Zosia Mamet, married actor Evan Jonigkeit in 2016. They had been a couple for three and a half years before they became engaged. “We knew we wanted to get married out of the city at somewhere that felt like a destination, but was still easy for all of our friends to get to,” Zosia reminisced. She may not have worn white, but she did wear designer.
“The dress I ultimately chose was by Givenchy, and it was the last one I tried on – the minute it went over my head, both my friends gasped,” she revealed. “It definitely wasn’t the most epic in terms of the dress’s power on its own, but it fits me like a glove in every way, and I knew, without a doubt, that it was my dress. That was it, I bought it off the rack.” When in doubt it seems, go with the one that fits the best.
Karmen Pedaru Shocking Smock
Fashion model Karmen Pedaru got married to art director and creative agency founder Riccardo Ruini in 2012. They opted for a beachfront wedding celebration in Ibiza in front of their many guests, where the bride chose to wear an especially revealing dress.
The transparent outfit was designed by Francesco Scognamiglio, and was almost entirely transparent from top to bottom. There was floral applique detailing over her chest and hips to preserve some of her modesty, but otherwise relied on a pair of white undies. We’ve never seen a dress quite like it.
Christina Aguilera’s Teenie Tiny Gown
Popstar Christina Aguilera married marketing executive Jordan Bratman in 2005, having been an item for two years. They had the ceremony on an estate in Napa County, California, in front of all their friends and family. Aquilera’s hit single “Ain’t No Other Man” was directly about Jordan.
She was known for wearing provocative clothes as a popstar, and some of that style had bled into her wedding outfit. Instead of a floor-length dress, she went for something shorter and sweeter in a satin material. We think it manages to be absolutely adorable while also expressing the singer’s style.
Isabeli Fontana Is Totally Transparent
Brazilian Victoria’s Secret model Isabeli Fontana wed her singer beau Diego Ferrero by the beach in the Maldives. They first met on the Brazilian television show Altas Horas, before embarking on a three-year-long-relationship that got them to this point in 2016. And Isabeli had a very interesting idea in mind for her wedding dress.
She commissioned a Brazilian swimwear brand, Agua de Coco, to create her a bridal kaftan. It was the first piece of wedding attire they had ever created, but she proved us with her good judgment. Isabeli may not have been that covered up, but she looked sensational in the sheer outfit. We especially love the leaf beading.
Kristen McMenamy’s Tan Toga
Supermodel Kristen McMenamy got married to photographer Miles Aldridge in 1997. It was a great moment in fashion history as not only was the gown designed by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, pictured below, but he also walked her down the aisle. The wedding took place in London, England.
And it seems Karl went for something quite different when it came to designed a wedding dress for his friend. Instead of white, he chose a warmer-toned beige that matched her blonde hair color. It looked toga-like with it’s one-shoulder design, and had a matching fascinator headpiece that branched high above Kristen’s head.
Frida Gustavsson’s Nude Number
Swedish model Frida Gustavsson walked down the aisle with photographer Hjalmar Rechlin in 2015 in Sweden. She was only 21 years old on her big day, but that wasn’t going to stop her eloping. It was a classy and traditional affair, with her dress taking on the best of both worlds.
Frida’s floral Valentino gown was high-necked and long-sleeved, but feature a flesh-toned slip underneath. The top layer of the dress was white and transparent, so the beige tones really came through in person. Frida found a way to marry both traditional bridal style with something a little more edgy.
Lara Stone’s Seductive Slit Dress
Dutch runway model Lara Stone married British comedian David Walliams in 2010 at the Claridge’s Hotel in London. They had met at a Chelsea soccer match the year before and became engaged just a few short months after. In the end, they were together for five years as a married couple.
Lara combined an elegant and traditional bridal style with something a little more provocative. It was a custom Givenchy gown designed by Riccardo Tisci that was very figure-hugging and sleek. It had a thigh-high slit in the skirt, revealing Lara’s famously long legs.
Ilana Glazer’s Minimalistic Pinafore
Broad City star and comedienne Ilana Glazer married David Rooklin, a Doctor of computational biology, in 2017. They have been together for a long time and decided to tie the knot in their home town of New York City. They kept it low-key: “We put it together in three weeks. For us, it was about being married,” Illana said when speaking about their big day.
Ilana’s dress was off-white and made from a sheer chiffon fabric that fell down to the floor. It had long sleeves, a high neckline, and was extremely simple. There were hardly any embellishments even made to the frock, except for two long pinafore straps that ended at the waist. For Ilana and David, their wedding was all about substance over style. “It was special, and the ceremony was meaningful,” said Glazer.
Julianne Hough’s Fantasy Playsuit
American actress and dancer Julianne Hough married her former NHL player beau Brooks Laich in 2017, in a gorgeous lake-front ceremony. They said their “I do’s” in Idaho at the Lake Coeur d’Alene, which required transporting their guests via boat to the exclusive ceremony site.
Julianne wore more than one dress on her special day, having one reserved for the ceremony and one for after. Here, she’s pictured in her revealing Marchesa creation. It featured a bridal playsuit layered with a sheer and exquisitely embellished skirt and cape. It balanced Julianne’s playful style perfectly with a more traditional bridal look.
Kelly Ripa’s Clearance Sale Bargain
Talk show host Kelly Ripa and actor Mark Consuelos have been married for over 20 years, saying their vows back in 1996. They’re one of Hollywood’s golden couples, having managed to sustain a long and happy marriage despite being in the public eye. After two decades together, they have three children. And we’re surprised and happy to say that Kelly’s dress has very humble origins.
“I bought it at the Barney’s Warehouse sale. I didn’t buy it as a wedding dress. I just bought it because it was really pretty,” Kelly recalled. She only paid $199 on the final clearance sale. And it’s in continuous rotation: “I swear to you, I wear it constantly. It’s a beach cover-up now. I wear it all the time. It was the best $199 I ever spent in my life.” On the right, you can see Ripa re-wearing the dress, 20 years since they said their “I dos.”
Serena Williams’ Short Skirt
Tennis superstar Serena Williams married Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian in an elaborate Disney Beauty and the Beast-themed wedding in 2017. It took place in New Orleans and had a strict guest list of 200 family and friends. And the athlete went all out when it came to her bridal outfits.
She actually wore three different ensembles to wed Alexis. Versace had created all of them, and one was reserved especially for their first dance together as husband and wife. Here she is in the gown worn especially for their first dance, which was to the Beauty and the Beast song “Tale as Old as Time.” It was a fitted gown with intricate embroidery on the bodice and a short feathered skirt. She looked sensational.
Mia Goth’s Caped Retro Throwback
Actress Mia Goth married actor and filmmaker Shia Labeouf in 2016. They had first met four years prior, starring in a Lars von Trier film together. They ended up eloping in Las Vegas at a chapel service conducted by an Elvis impersonator, and the whole thing was captured on film unbeknownst to them.
Mia threw it back to the sixties with her white mini dress. it had that classic mod fashion silhouette and a flower pattern, with 3/4 length sleeves and a high neck. Her own personal touch was the scarf she chose to wear in the place of a traditional veil, which sat towards the back of her hair. The whole look was adorable.
Samantha Lee Gibson’s a Pink Valentine
Rapper Tyrese Gibson found love with Samantha Lee Gibson, a social worker from Georgia. They wed in 2017 on Valentine’s Day itself, making it a doubly special day for them and for their guests. And if that wasn’t sugary-sweet enough, Samantha chose to wear a girly pink Bridal gown.
Samantha shied away from a classic white dress for this millennial-pink tone instead. In fact, if we didn’t know it was her wedding we wouldn’t have guessed it was a bridal dress at all. It was a halterneck with a jeweled collar minimal detailing elsewhere. And paired with that sparkling headband this dress is definitely the Valentine’s wedding outfit of dreams.
Kayla Rae Reid’s Suave Suit
Playboy model Kayla Rae Reid stole the heart of American 12-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer Ryan Lochte’s back in 2015. He had sent her a message on Instagram, and things went so well that they became engaged the following year. In 2018, they had an at-home civil ceremony with a more formal wedding ceremony taking place several months later.
Looking at Kayla from the top up you wouldn’t suspect anything was different about this bridal outfit. But a quick glance at the lower half and it’s clear just how different this wedding ensemble really is. She opted for tailored pants instead of a dress or skirt, with a detachable train behind it. It’s unusual to see a bride wearing pants with a skirt, so we appreciate just how unique this really was.
Scarlett Byrne’s Courthouse Corset
Harry Potter actress Scarlet Byrne became engaged to Hugh Hefner’s son Cooper back in 2015. It took them four years to tie the knot, which they did at a regular courthouse. Recently, the couple confirmed that Scarlet is pregnant with their first child.
For their registry office wedding, Scarlett donned this beautiful two-piece set. The top was a corset-inspired camisole with lace fringing, and had a plain but matching skirt. It was made up in a linen-like material, giving the the bride a laid-back Mykonnos vibe.
Domino Kirke’s No-Frills Frock
English-American singer Domino Kirke said her “I do’s” to actor and musician Penn Badgley in 2017, having started going out in 2014. They kept it simple, declaring their vows in a New York City courthouse in late February. It was so low-key, they took their guests to a simple restaurant to eat after the ceremony.
Not everyone who wears an unconventional outfit on their wedding day wants to be big and loud. Domino went for a short and fuss-free lace dress, leaving the fitted and custom gown to others. We don’t know about you, but we think it’s rather touching that she didn’t have a need to feel overly glamorous on her wedding day. The focus lay on what was happening, not what they were wearing.
Erin Foster’s Bridal Bodycon
Actress, writer, and daughter of record producer David Foster, Erin Foster found the love of her life in the arms of businessman Simon Tikhman, pictured in the white tuxedo behind her. They tied the knot in Nashville, Tennessee, in December 2019 with Erin’s young stepmom Katharine McPhee providing the music.
When Erin’s not acting as the creative head of the Bumble dating app, she’s getting creative with her style. She had more than one dress for her special day, wanting to wear something more playful and provocative for the evening entertainment. She opted for this slinky bodycon dress, but added flowing chiffon fabric around her skirt and shoulders, giving it that bridal touch.
Brigitte Bardot’s Gingham Gown
1960’s siren Brigitte Bardot’s second wedding to actor Jacques Charrier (pictured) saw her dress completely different from her first wedding to Roger Vadim. She was secretly pregnant with Jacques’ son in 1959 when she walked down the aisle, but you wouldn’t have guessed from what she wore for her big day.
She wore a checker-print gingham dress in a sugar-sweet pink color – a very daring choice for the ’50s. It had frilly white accents on the cuffs, collar, and pockets, and was a far cry from her first stiff and serious wedding dress. Having obeyed wedding traditions the first time around, she was due for an opportunity to spice things up.
Lake Bell’s Beaded Brilliance
Actress and director Lake Bell served up something new for her nuptials. She married New York-based artist and tattooist Scott Campbell (pictured) in 2013 with their dogs acting as groomsmen! The ceremony took place in Marigny Opera House in New Orleans, Louisiana, Scott’s beloved hometown.
Lake’s wedding gown was created by Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, who once professed that her favorite people to dress “are those who are risk-takers, who aren’t afraid to push boundaries.” And that’s exactly what Lake did with this multi-tiered creation that mixes fringing with intricate beading.
Chrissy Teigen’s Rouge Ruffles
When model Chrissy Teigan married singer John Legend (pictured) in 2013, she wanted to go all out with her wedding dress. That’s why she opted for not one but three different gowns to don throughout her special day! They had been together for four years at that point, after having met on the set of a music video.
All three of Chrissy’s gowns were designed by Vera Wang and all showcase some very different looks. While her ceremony dress was white and her dinner dress was ivory, she spotted this red number on the rack while at her final fitting and knew she just had to have it. She wore it as her reception dress in the bold red color that it came in.
Piper Perabo’s Disco Ball Gown
American actress Piper Perabo has been a leading cast member of films like Coyote Ugly and Cheaper by the Dozen but took on her biggest role yet for USA Network’s Covert Affairs. She became engaged to director Stephen Kay (pictured) in 2013, having her wedding in the Big Apple the following year.
Piper chose to leave behind traditional wedding attire for her nuptials. She went for an unusual metallic and sheer figure-hugging dress that had her sparkling all the way down the aisle. Pairing that with an equally unique sheer yellow veil, she’s definitely one of the more artisanal and “textured” looking brides we’ve seen.
Angelina Jolie’s Splendour of Scribbles
Brangelina were the Hollywood power couple of everyone’s dreams. They were good-looking, famous, rich, and have gone down in history as one of the most glamorous couples. They ended up having six children together, three of whom were adopted before they finally got married in 2014.
This was one of two dresses she wore to her wedding, created by Versace’s master tailor Luigi Massi. It featured drawings from all of her children scribbled all throughout the floor-length veil. “Luigi is like family to me and I couldn’t imagine anyone else making the dress,” she revealed, adding “He knows and cares for the children and it was great fun putting it together.” Angelina found a way to make this dress especially personal.
