From the hills of California to the bustling streets of New York, for years viewers have counted on The Real Housewives to show us what it really means to be a big city socialite. Since the reality franchise first kicked off in Orange County back in 2006, we have not been able to get enough of the glitz, glamour, and drink tossing drama.
And although the high-class women introduced to us through the years appear to be born with a silver spoon, you might be surprised to find out their true origin story. Here to make this hair-raising guilty pleasure even more enticing, let’s take a look at how much has changed for our favorite glam queens. And we aren’t just talking about their nose jobs…
Adriana De Moura Was an Art Student
Before starring in the original three-season run of The Real Housewives of Miami, Adriana was an art student setting her eyes on success. Known by fans as “the Brazilian bombshell of the Miami art scene,” Adriana studied Art & Culture in Florence and later continued her studies at the Paris’ Sorbonne Institute.
Although the pair didn’t publicly tie the knot until 2013, in 2008 the Brazilian native married Frederic Marq, a French-born entrepreneur and the owner and operator of Frederic Marq Design. Marq made several appearances on RHOM and many accuse the pair of keeping their marriage a secret so that they could get married on the show. De Moura recently revealed that she and Marq have decided to split.
Luann D’Agostino Worked As a Geriatric Nurse
Luann D’Agostino aka “The Countess,” surprisingly comes from very humble beginnings. Before appearing in The Real Housewives of New York and starring in 9 out of 10 seasons, D’Agostino actually worked as a nurse and a model in her hometown of Connecticut. “I grew up in a middle-class family as one of seven children,” said D’Agostino when talking about her past.
“I happened to marry a French aristocrat but I had worked since I was 16 years old.” After finding success as a model, the rising star then moved to Italy where she worked for Italian television. She married her now ex-husband, Count Alexandre de Lesseps in 1993, and together they had two kids. Today Luann is twice divorced and starring in her own cabaret show, Countess and Friends.
Gretchen Rossi Pursued a Career in Real Estate
Gretchen Rossi, The Real Housewives of Orange County’s quintessential blond bombshell, first joined the cast in 2009 and starred on the show throughout season four-eight. Prior to this, however, Rossi studied psychiatry at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. After graduating she decided to change career paths to join the then-booming real estate industry.
Her real estate dreams were put on hold though when her fiancé Jeff was diagnosed with Leukemia. Gretchen put everything aside to care for him full time until his tragic passing. Since then, the reality star has developed her own makeup line, Gretchen Christine Beaute, and is now boo’d up with fellow RHOC regular, Slade Smiley.
Bethenny Frankel Started a Baking Business
After moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, Bethenny Frankel ended up working a variety of odd jobs. That included nannying Paris Hilton, becoming a personal assistant to Jerry and Linda Bruckheimer and even working as a production assistant on the set of Saved by the Bell. After her party planning business fell through Frankel moved on to start her own healthy baked goods business called BethennyBakes.
Proving her businsss savy was ahead of the curve, in 2005 Bethenny Bakes became one of two finalists on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. She joined the original cast of The Real Housewives of New York City in 2008 and stayed with the show for eight seasons. Since then Frankel started her own production company, B Real Productions and created Skinnygirl Cocktails which has since transformed into a multi- million dollar lifestyle empire.
Lisa Rinna Was a Soap Opera Star
Actress Lisa Rinna was definitely a star long before joining the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills back in 2014. After moving to California from her hometown in Oregon, Rinna soon became well known for her breakthrough roles in Days of Our Lives and Melrose Place. Not done taking over the soap opera scene, she then became a four-time Emmy nominated talk show host for her time hosting Soapnet’s Soap Talk.
Moving on to the stage Rinna also starred in the Broadway production of Chicago. And this is just a sample of her long list of notable acting, hosting, and reality television credits. Not to mention releasing three books. Rinna joined the cast of RHBH in its fifth season as the “housewife” of actor Harry Hamlin, whom she married in 1997. Today Rinna is also currently working on her own activewear and cosmetics line.
Lisa Hochstein Was a Playboy Playmate
The Real Housewives of Miami’s Lisa Hochstein was never one to shy away from the camera. Even before joining the cast in the show’s second and third seasons, she was looking for her place under the spotlight. She began her career as a model and a beauty queen and even won Miss Swimsuit Canada in 2002.
The aspiring star also had a stint as one of Hugh Hefner’s playmates and she later became a lifestyle and fitness guru. In 2009 Lisa married plastic surgeon Lenny Hochstein which set her on her course to become a plastic surgery-loving real housewife. As Lisa put it herself on the show, she is her husband’s “best creation.” Since the show, Lisa and Lenny have had two children via surrogate.
Joyce Giraud Is a Former Miss Puerto Rico
In 2013, for the show’s fourth season, model and actress Joyce Giraud decided to grace the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. But Giraud was making waves long before this. Joyce grew up in Puerto Rico where she began modeling in order to pay for university. She earned degrees in social work and special education but decided to further pursue her career in front of the camera.
And it didn’t take long for this gorgeous queen to climb to the top, becoming one of the biggest models in her home country. This is what also brought her to be crowned Miss Puerto Rico. She held this title twice and was second-runner up in the 1998 Miss Universe pageant. Her pageant success kickstarted her career as an actress and a producer and is what brought her to RHBH cast as the housewife of German film producer Michael Ohoven.
Shannon Beador Had a Privileged Upbringing
Growing up in the upscale community of Rancho Santa Fe in California, real housewife Shannon Beador had long been acquainted with her “silver spoon” lifestyle. Her grandfather, Robert Shannon was actually the president of I. Magnin & Company, a department store bought-out by Macy’s in the late 80s.
Beador’s privileged upbringing is what made her a perfect addition to The Real Housewives of Orange County cast, which she joined in the show’s 9th season. At the time Beador was married and raising her three children with her husband, David Beador, however the pair have since divorced.
Kim Zolciak-Biermann Was an Aspiring Country Singer
Kim Zolciak-Biermann joined the original cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2008 and left during the show’s 5th season. Right around the time that she made her housewife debut, the mother of two also began working on her country music album and she released her debut single “Tardy for The Party” the following year. Prior to pursuing her career in music, however, the reality star actually was down a different route.
In 1996 Kim studied nursing at the University of Connecticut and she moved to Atlanta Georgia soon after. Since her departure from Real Houswives, Biermann received her own spin-off Don’t Be Tardy for the Wedding which documented her wedding to football star, Kroy Biermann. The pair had four kids together. Kim was also a contestant on Dancing With The Stars and started her own line of skin-care products.
Yolanda Hadid Was an International Supermodel
Born in the Netherlands, Yolanda Hadid was first discovered at the age of 16 after being asked to replace a model at dutch designer Frans Molenaar’s show. Apparently, she was natural because she was signed by Eileen Ford after that and she quickly began booking gigs all across the world. Her career spanned 15 years before she decided to settle down.
Ready to start a family, Hadid moved to Los Angeles where she married her first husband, Mohamed Hadid. Together they had three kids, two of which (Gigi and Bella) have followed in their mother’s modeling footsteps. Hadid joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in the show’s third season and she stayed with the cast until season six. Since then she has divorced and remarried David Foster but they have also since parted ways.
Cristy Rice Ran a Children’s Boutique
Before the drama stirring Cristy Rice appeared for her one-season run on The Real Housewives of Miami in 2011, she had a fair share of drama going on in her own life. For one, she had just divorced former NBA star Glen Rice. With the split, Rice was learning what it was to be a single mom to her three kids.
Not only that but she was also running her children’s boutique, Bri Bri. These days, nine years since her short-lived housewife debut, Rice is continuing to flex her entrepreneurial muscles with the launch of her swimwear line Cuban Rice Swimwear.
Ramona Singer Started Her Career In Sales
As is clear when watching her on The Real Housewives of New York City, Ramona Singer has always held a passion for fashion. After earning a degree in marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Singer joined the elite Macy’s executive training program as a buyer. She then continued her career in sales at big-name companies like Calvin Klein.
From their Ramona’s entrepreneurial spirit began to shine through as she created her own companies in retail. She now owns two jewelry companies True Faith jewelry and HSN jewelry collection as well as her own wine, Ramona Pinot Grigio. Ramona was part of the original cast of RHNYC and she is still there today as the show enters season 12.
Joanna Krupa Was a Model
Born in Warsaw Poland, Krupa immigrated to the US when she was only five years old. At the age of 20 she decided to move from Chicago to Los Angeles to pursue her career as a model. And boy did her career take off from there. Krupa has appeared on over 100 covers world-wide including huge names like Cosmo, Shape, GQ and Playboy.
She was even named by Maxim as the “Sexiest Swimsuit Model” and made it onto their ranking of “The World’s Hottest Women” in 2011. In 2009 Krupa also put her childhood ballet training to work when she joined season 9 of Dancing with The Stars. After marrying businessman, Romain Zago in 2010, Krupa joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Miami in 2013 and was part of the show for its second and third seasons.
Caroline Manzo Helped Support The Family Business
Caroline Manzo, an original cast member of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, has been married to her husband Albert Manzo for well over 30 years. And while she spent much of her time raising their three children, Caroline also dedicated her efforts to the continued success of The Brownstone, one of New Jersey’s premier event spaces.
The couple inherited The Brownstone from Albert’s father and it had been in the family for multiple decades prior. The business has since extended to Brownstone Sauce and Cafface Beauty Bar, all of which Caroline takes part in running. Manzo was part of The Real Housewives cast for five seasons before starting her own spin-off show, Manzo’d with Children, which ran for three seasons.
Jaqueline Laurita Was a Cosmetologist
If you couldn’t tell simply by the glamour shot below, before becoming a real housewife Jaqueline Laurita was a Las Vegas cosmetologist. She later married Chris Laurita, who is the brother of fellow housewives Caroline and Dina Manzo, and the pair settled in New Jersey where she took on the role of stay at home mom.
Jaqueline joined the cast of The Real Housewives of New Jersey alongside her sisters in law and left the show after the fifth season. Since then Laurita has kept herself busy co writing her book Get It!: The Busy Girl’s Guide to Getting Your “It” Together: A Beauty, Style, and Wellness Book. No longer a Jersey girl, the Laurita family moved back to Las Vegas in 2019.
Lea Has a Background in The Beauty Industry
Lea Black, or as she likes to call herself, “Mayor of Miami,” is a Texas native who moved to Miami to do good and talk money. She is well known as the founder of The Blacks’ Annual Gala, which was documented several times while starring in The Real Housewives of Miami. She met her husband, Roy Black while Leas was on the jury of the trial of William Kennedy Smith and Roy served as his attorney. Scandalous right?!
Prior to becoming a real housewife, Lea already had a fair share of experience working in the beauty industry and she used that experience to develop over 400 products. This includes her line Lea Black Beauty and her After Five crystal handbags. She also found time to write a fictional mystery novel, Lea’s Little Black Book.
Phaedra Parks Started Her Own Entertainment Law Firm
Phaedra Parks first joined The Real Housewives of Atlanta back in season three and she definitely earned her title as the “queen of shade” throughout her three-season run. Before bringing her southern belle sass to the show, Parks was actually a well-known celebrity defense attorney. And she had quite a successful career representing some big names in the business.
Phaedra is the Managing Partner of her own national boutique law firm, The Parks Group, P.C. Through the years Parks she has represented celebrities like Ludacris, Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, and even her husband, Apollo Nida who she was married to from 2009 till 2017.
Vicki Gunvalson Worked in Health Insurance
Known as “the OG of the OC” Vicki Gunvalson has been part of The Real Housewives of Orange County cast since its first season and she stuck with it for fourteen drama-filled years. Before that, however, Gunvalson was learning what it meant to be a single working mom. She and her first husband divorced when she was 29 years old and that was when she decided to become a licensed life and health insurance saleswoman.
Soon enough the hardworking mother of two was out selling and outshining all her fellow salespeople and today she is the proud owner of Coto Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. Her son Michael has also followed in her footsteps and is now Vice President of Coto Insurance.
Teresa Giudice Worked for Macy’s
Back in the day, before spending time behind bars and before starring as an original cast member on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Teresa Giudice was a student at Berkeley College studying fashion marketing. After that, she landed a job at Macy’s as an associate buyer. Teresa remained on the RHNJ cast throughout its ten season run, although she did have to take a brief hiatus to serve her 11 months prison sentence.
Putting her days of crime behind her, today the Italian mother of four has taken on the world of competitive bodybuilding. Not only that but she also authored four cookbooks and a memoir. In 2012 she also appeared on Celebrity Apprentice where she raised $70,000 for the charity NephCure. Way to turn over a new leaf Ms. Giudice!
Kyle Richards Was Already a Well Established Actress
Born and raised in Hollywood, Kyle Richards was always destined to become a star. She began her acting career in the 70s when she appeared on the now-classic television series, Little House on the Prairie. Later she starred in the slasher film Halloween alongside the scream queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis.
Richards continued booking roles in both television and the big screen and in 2012 she joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alongside her big sister and fellow actress, Kim Richards. Kyle remained a real houswife for the show’s ten season run. Today she continues to act and also stays busy running her numerous fashion ventures.
Heather Dubrow Was a Television Actress
You might recognize the woman on the right as Heather Dubrow from seasons 7 through eleven of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Almost unrecognizable is Dubrow’s younger self on the left. Who doesn’t love a throwback blowout?
Back in the day, before her real housewives days and before she tied the knot with famed plastic surgeon Terry Dubrow, Heather was pursuing a career in acting. From 2000 to 2002, she starred in the CBS television drama That’s Life, which remained her most notable role throughout her career. She was also responsible for That’s Life’s theme song “Learnin’ As I Go,” which was featured in its second season.
Aviva Drescher Was a Law Student
No matter what people have to say about Aviva Drescher, one thing is for sure, this housewife is as well educated as they come. Drescher has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College, a Masters degree in French from New York University, and a JD from The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Born and raised in New York, this city girl can be found gracing the cast of Real Housewives of New York City in both seasons 5 and 6.

Kim Richards Was a Child Actress
Kim Richards kick-started her career under the limelight at just a few months old when she appeared in a TV commercial for Firth Carpet. Destined for success, upon graduating, Armstrong moved to California and started her own e-commerce business.
She met her now ex-husband, venture capitalist Russell Armstrong soon after and in 2010 joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her run on the show was significantly full of drama and one particular on-screen brawl was even transformed into a now-iconic meme. Today she has remarried attorney, John Bluher and she is a New York Times best-selling author.
NeNe Leakes was An Aspiring Actress
Before joining The Real Housewives of Atalanta as part of the show’s original cast, the no-nonsense and outspoken NeNe Leakes was already kick-starting her career as an actress. She landed a minor role in The Parkers and also co-starred alongside Beyoncé in the film, The Fighting Temptations. Unfortunately, her scenes in the film were cut but that wasn’t going to discourage Ms. Leakes from reaching for the stars.
Leakes remained a part of the Real Housewives cast up until the show’s eighth season. Since then she landed a re-occurring role as Roz Washington on the Fox series Glee. She has also appeared on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Leaks also appeared on Broadway in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
Tamra Judge Was a Part-Time Realtor
When Tamra Judge first auditioned to join the cast of The Real Housewives of Orange County the reality star revealed that she “jokingly filled out an application,” and never expected to actually get a call-back. At the time the mother of four was working as a part-time realtor and was struggling with keeping her marriage together.
Since joining the show in season three, Judge had divorced from her now ex-husband and has remarried producer Eddie Judge. As fans know, her split caused a huge divide within her family and she is now focusing on rebuilding her life for herself and her kids.
Lydia McLaughlin Was a Canadian Heiress
For those of you who don’t know, Lydia McLaughlin’s grandfather is the one and only Geoff Stirling who is the founder of NTV, North America’s first 24-hour TV station. Kenya Moore Won The Miss USA Contest
Kenya Moore rose to prominence nearly two decades prior to joining the cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Back in 1993, Moore was crowned Miss USA and went on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe contest, where she placed fifth. Moore’s acting career took off from there as she began making appearances in big names shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Meet The Browns, and The Steve Harvey Show, to name a few.
She also appeared in several films and graced the cover of magazines like Glamour and Seventeen. The former beauty queen joined the Real Housewives cast in the show’s fifth season and has done everything but slow down since then. She authored a book, appeared on Celebrity Apprentice, started her own production company, released her own exercise video, and launched her own brand of hair care products.
Eileen Davidson Was a Soap Opera Star
Eileen Davidson is not just any soap opera star. On the contrary, as a two-time Daytime Emmy Award-winner, Davidson has long earned her place as soap royalty. She won her first Emmy for lead actress for her role in Days of Our Lives and her second for her time starring in The Young and the Restless. She also starred in the hit soap The Bold and the Beautiful as well as several films throughout the 1980s.
In addition to acting, Davidson also authored a number of mystery novels. And all this before she even joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which she remained a part of in seasons five through seven. Today she continues to act and is happily married to former tennis professional, and World Poker Tour commentator Vincent Van Patten.
Alexis Bellino Was a News Correspondent
Alexis Bellino was originally from the small town of Hannibal, Missouri where even from a young age she knew she wanted to end up in California. While attending college, she realized she had a passion for fashion and even created her own clothing collection. This eventually led her to become a lifestyle news correspondent on Fox 5 in San Diego which had long been a dream of hers.
These days Bellino is a proud stay-at-home mom to her three kids. Since her time starring in The Real Housewives of Orange County, Bellino has divorced from her now ex-husband, Jim Bellino, and is now newly engaged to boyfriend Andy Bohn, whom she just can’t stop swooning over.
Alexia Echevarria Helped Create Venue Magazine
When we were first introduced to Alexia in season one of The Real Housewives of Miami, she was already working on putting together Venue Magazine with her then-husband, Herman Echevarria. But a lot has changed for the self-proclaimed “Cuban Barbie” since then. For one, she split from Echevarria, who tragically passed away just a year after.
Alexia was then forced into a heated legal battle with her step-sons over ownership of their home as well as the majority shares of Venue. The judge eventually ruled in favor of Herman’s sons and Alexia was forced to completely start over. Today she is engaged to be married to her new beau, Miami real estate investor, and developer Todd Nepola. And she is now the new owner of Miami’s Alexia + Frankie’s Beauty Bar.
Cynthia Bailey Was an Actress and Model
When Cynthia Bailey was still in high school in Alabama, she became the first African American student to be crowned homecoming queen. That inspired her to compete in a homecoming queen pageant where she was discovered by a talent scout. At the age of 18, using money she raised by working part-time at the mall, Bailey moved to New York to begin her modeling career.
Bailey has made numerous acting appearances, including a one-episode role in The Cosby Show. She has modeled for companies such as Maybelline and Target and was featured in several magazines including Vogue, Glamour, and her personal favorite, Vanity Fair. Since being introduced in The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s third season, Bailey has opened her own modeling school as well as her own wine bar and event space.
Kathy Wakile Was a Hairdresser
Kathy Wakile worked as a hairdresser for years before deciding to take on the role of stay at home mom. It was that decision that led her to start baking at home and from there she transformed her new passion into her career. Now her book, Indulge: Delicious Little Desserts That Keep Life Real Sweet has become a national best-seller and has inspired the creation of her very own dessert line.
On top of creating her gourmet baking empire, Wakile is also an original cast member on The Real Housewives of New Jersey where she shows viewers what it means to be a true Italian-American Jersey mother. Since joining the show she has also introduced three product lines, Dolci Della Dea, which includes baking products like her famous gourmet cannoli kit, Goddess Eye Jewelry, and Red Velvet Cosmo, a ready-to-pour cocktail.
Lisa Vanderpump Designed Bars and Restaurants in London
Before moving to Los Angeles, Lisa Vanderpump and her husband Ken had already co-owned and designed 26 London based bars and restaurants. It was then that they decided to continue their entrepreneurial efforts in the U.S and to fully take on LA. And as is well documented, the business has been booming ever since. Before all this, Lisa did have a brief stint as a child actress.

Sonja Morgan Was a Hostess at An Italian Restaurant
Sonja Morgan first met her now ex-husband, John Adams Morgan while working on Madison Avenue as a hostess at an Italian restaurant. Prior to this she was taking on Paris and Milan as a fashion model and was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Clearly Morgan’s dreams were in fashion. And although her marriage came to a rocky ending, her career and social status certainly took a step in the right direction.
Morgan joined the cast of The Real Houswives of New York City in the show’s third season where she was already well established as one of New York’s fixtures of high society. She has since launched several award-winning luxury brands, including her signature fashion line Sonja Morgan New York, and TipsyGirl, a Prosecco and sparkling Rosé line.
Kandi Burruss Was an Award-Winning Songwriter
Burruss first began taking on the music industry back in the early 90s as a member of the female R&B group Xscape. Shortly after the songstress went and earned herself a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song all thanks to her writing contribution to the smash-hit TLC song, “No Scrubs.”
Burruss joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta in the show’s second season. Her time as a real housewife has since inspired her own spin-off, The Kandi Factory.
