The Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable is an incredible, renowned masterpiece and the single most expensive contemporary art show in the world. The underwater treasures are an assemblage, (collectively weighing 460 tons) of 189 ancient statues and vessels, excavated from the greatest depths of the Indian Ocean (in 2008). The exhibition’s largest sculpture towers over 60 feet tall, so it’s not much of a surprise the masterpiece spans over two whole venues and blankets 54,000 feet of gallery space.
British legend, Damien Hurst, is the featuring artist and proud creator of this glorious marine masterpiece. Costing him £50 million, this was Hurst’s first major show in 13 years, and it took him and his team an entire 10 years to complete.
The exhibition ultimately tells the tale of the wrecked ancient ship called, The Unbelievable, which vanished in the first or second century. Rumor has it, the precious cargo on the ship belonged to a freed, wealthy Turkish slave, Amotan, who had set sail in search of a faraway and long-lost, sun-temple.
The ancient riches of the Wreck, are now exquisitely eroded almost beyond recognition by touches of coral, barnacles, and other accretions from the depths of the ocean.
