When you think tall, dark and handsome Jason Momoa is definitely someone that always comes to mind. The Hawaiian born superstar stole our hearts with his charismatic look and dashing smile and most agree that he does not need to change a thing.
Despite our opinion on the matter, it seems Jason was in the mood for a change and naturally, even an everyday shave for the star had to get done in the most epic way possible.
His Trademark Look
Momoa began his acting career in 1999 on the hit show Baywatch. If you saw 20-year-old Momoa on the beach running in slow motion rocking those red trunks, you would not recognize him for who he is today. The young Momoa is short haired, clean shaven, and tattoo free.
Most know Momoa for his role as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones or as Aquamanfrom the Marvel universe movies. No matter what his role though, his trademark beard, long locks, and rugged Islander looks are almost always incorporated into his characters. Which is why this change came to such a shock to his fans.
In a YouTube video titled “Goodbye Drogo…I SHAVED!” Momoa is seen sauntering through a remote desert scenery with clippers in hand. Him and his friend, who never gets introduced, stop in what seems to be the middle of nowhere and the two start casually shaving their beards. There is no mirror or sink present. Momoa just buzzes away his entire beard, eliminating his signature look while talking softly to the camera.
Although we were apprehensive about the change, Momoa is most certainly rocking that clean-shaven face. We can’t help but wonder what Momoa’s wife, actress Lisa Bonet, had to say about her main man’s new look. If you think he did this simply to catch the attention of all his adoring fans or to devastate beard lovers worldwide, you are way off.
Shaving for Awareness
In the description of the video, Momoa wrote “I’m shaving this beast off, it’s time to make a change,” Momoa continues. “A change for the better…for my kids, your kids, the world. Let’s make a positive change for the health of our planet.” Still confused? Well, apparently this change of face is actually a metaphor for changing the way we drink water.
In the video, the actor urges his fans to stop using plastic and to switch to aluminum alternatives. He explains, “I just want to do this to bring awareness that plastics are ruining our planet, and I think I have a solution,” he said. “There’s only one thing that can really help our planet and save our planet as long as we recycle, and that’s aluminum. It’s 100 percent recyclable.” He then, in the most nonchalant way possible, brings up his new product, Mananalu.
Wave of Change
Mananalu, coming from the words ‘mana’ meaning the sacred spirit of life and ‘nalu’ meaning a powerful wave, is basically water in an aluminum can. With this product, Momoa hopes to eliminate single-use plastic drinking bottles and begin an “unstoppable wave of change” that will lower the amount of litter currently degrading our environment. In the video, Momoa shows off the aesthetically designed cans, takes a big gulp and exclaims “it’s just water but I feel good about it.”
Other than his looks Momoa is known for his down to earth personality and relatable charm. Although raised in Norwalk, Iowa, Momoa takes great pride in his Hawaiian heritage. He has several tribal tattoos and is often seen performing the haka dance, a ceremonial dance in Maori culture. We can imagine that these tribal roots are part of what compelled him to create such a sustainable product.
