She had a considerable on-screen presence, not only for her off-beat roles but because of her huge blue eyes and long dark hair.
It’ll surprise you to learn that Zooey is actually a natural blonde. That’s right- she wasn’t born with that rich, mahogany-colored hair, she’s been having it dyed all these years. Her real shade of blonde leans a bit honey-toned, which equally makes her eyes pop. She definitely suits both, but it totally changes her whole look.

As one of the most famous blondes in the world, it’s certainly a surprise to see that she is actually a natural dark brunette. The picture on the left shows the beach babe in high school during the ’70s with her dark and luscious Farah Fawcett-like hair curled away from the face. Now at the age of 53, she has returned to her darker-hair days which she started dying when she was 20 years old. And get this – she does it herself, at home.

She played Bella Swan, the highschooler with fair skin and dark hair that stole the heart of an undercover vampire, Edward Cullen. In reality, Kristen’s vampy look that made her famous is entirely manufactured. She’s a natural blonde of all things, something which still doesn’t sit right with us. Leigh prefers to have a deep black hair color, which can come as quite a challenge since she’s naturally a light blonde. American actress Ariel Winter is most famous for portraying Alex Dunphy in NBC’s comedy series Modern Family. She’s the teenage daughter to characters Claire and Phil who’s intelligent with a lot of ambition. We’ve only ever known of her with her trademark black tresses. While she has been showing interest in experimenting with her hair color lately, underneath it all she’s a dark blonde. That’s owing to her father’s German roots, while her mother is of Greek descent. We would have never guessed.

She had to do so for her role in the Italian historical comedy Mio figlio Nerone, where she opted out of wearing a wig and chose to dive straight into the deep end. But she had always been a blonde before starring in the HBO show and has returned to it today. She recalls the challenges she faced at the beginning: “It was difficult, especially being in an all-girls school. There seemed to be a bad connotation with red or ginger hair, so I was nervous.” Luckily it looked amazing on her. She added, “I wouldn’t wear bright clothes because I wanted the [red] hair to speak for itself, but now as a blonde, I wear whatever I want.”

One of the most famous international faces of Latin America, Vergara’s long, dark locks are certainly a fixture of hers. But shockingly, in 2011 she revealed “I’m a natural blonde, like my siblings. The Black Widow actress appears in the Marvel universe as a fiery redhead, but most of the time we see her as a quintessential blonde bombshell. Her thick, dark eyebrows and mousy blonde hair are her trademark look, despite having gone through a multitude of styles as a model. But the color we all assumed comes naturally to her is actually a lightened version of her real hair. She might have been this blonde as a kid, but now that she’s more mature she’s a far darker shade of brown.

Her iconic peroxide curls were her trademark style, of which many women tried to emulate. But her real hair color, which she never let grow out, was a chestnut brown with hints of red. She plays a socialite teenage girl from a privileged background, and her character arc has received considerable acclaim. Aside from TV, she’s appeared in several films, almost exclusively as a dark brunette.
However, Meester’s brown tresses aren’t her real color; she grew up as a natural blonde. She had to dye her hair to play Blair Waldorf, and simply never returned back to her golden shade. It’s rather ironic, as she is probably one of the most iconic brunettes in television history.

Both in True Blood and in real life, Anna has been a striking sandy blonde. She had to bleach her natural color for the role, but she liked it so much that it stuck. As a versatile actress, her hair has been through a fair few different colors. But peroxide blonde appeared to be her default. The truth is she grew up as a brunette and has been dying it several shades lighter for too many years to count. She went back to her dark shade for the Oscar’s in 2019, just for a bit of fun. She’s still a blonde through and through.

Her striking ginger mane as Jessica Hamby is all a farce – she’s actually a natural-born blonde. She kept it red in the years she played a vampire but went back to her true color once the show ended. The supermodel has almost always been seen with straight as a pencil, golden hair. But in reality, she’s constantly calling on her hairstylist to touch up her dark roots. As we can see in the photo on the left, she’s a true brunette. And she’s been that color ever since she was a little girl!

Our favorite Canadian isn’t really as blonde as we’re used to seeing in the films; she’s really a chocolate brunette. Starring as Alice, Greene had to have a short and dark choppy bob hairstyle. Even though she’s only 22 years old, Bella has died her hair all sorts of colors. But she’s not a redhead at all – she’s all blonde.
Jessica Alba’s Mahogany Mop
American actress and businesswoman Jessica Alba has starred in several box office hits over the years, including the Fantastic Four series, Good Luck Chuck, and Little Fockers. Jessica’s most famous roles have seen her with either light brunette locks, blonde hair (as Nancy in Sin City or Sue Storm in Fantastic Four,) or something in between. But her true shade is darker than what filmmakers tend to choose for her; it’s a deep brunette. We can’t think why they don’t cast her with her natural color more often!

Shaleine sported peroxide blonde hair in 2017 and 2018, deivating from her usual light brown or strawberry blonde tresses. But since 2019, she’s wanted to return to her real natural color – dark mahogany brown – and we think it’s suits her so perfectly.

It kickstarted a successful acting career in Hollywood, in which she’s earned the main character position in several productions.
Her trademark red/auburn hair on My So-Called Life was straight and shoulder-length, in keeping with the style of the ’90s. But she’s carved out her own path in Hollywood, and now boasts appearing in some of the biggest blockbusters. She is best known for her role as the Scarlett Witch in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
Elizabeth changes up her hair color so frequently, it’s hard to keep up. She switches from blonde to brunette to blonde again, making it unclear what her natural shade is. Both her older sisters are blonde so naturally, you might assume she shares the same coloring. But she’s actually a lot darker than the twins, with deppy, chestnut-toned hair.

Shakira’s hips may not lie, but her hair sure does. Her trademark hair color has been dark blonde with highlights for as long as we can remember. Emilia Clarke Has Sienna Undertones
Emilia Clarke rose to be one of the most recognizable actresses after starring in HBO’s Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen. She played one of the most-loved characters on the hit show, for her powerful personality and mythological beauty. She’s only recently finished her obligations with HBO and has a promising career ahead of her.
As Daenerys, Clarke was a blonde as they get, with her long peroxide hair that reached her lower back. Emilia is actually a dark brunette with reddish undertones when she wears her hair naturally. Although, Daenrys obviously rubbed off on her as she’s experimented with the bleach in her personal life.

At some time in her young life, she dyed her hair a bright yellow blonde and stuck with that for most of her adult life. That gorgeous copper-tone actually comes naturally to lucky Lindsey – we can’t think why she’d want to change it.

Jessica Simpson and blonde hair go hand-in-hand, but only because she presents herself that way. She’s actually a bronzey brunette in a similar shade to her eye color. But bleaching and highlighting her tresses is a natural part of the upkeep in her books. Don’t expect her to go natural anytime soon.

In her personal life as well as for most of her professional life, Stone is always pictured with her trademark fiery red hair. Her fair skin and freckles tie into her ginger image. But it turns out the red locks are actually a result of dedicated dying. She’s actually a natural blonde. She explained, “My hair grows out blonde, but my coloring is similar to that of a redhead.” That’s why it suits her so well!

American author, actress, and singer Molly Ringwald started making a name for herself when she was cast in NBC’s The Facts of Life. But it was her performances in films of the 1980s, namely Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink that turned her into a huge teen idol.
Her signature style in the ’80s was short red hair with long feathery bangs. Even after her heyday as a teenage idol, she kept the auburn color and still has it even to this day. It’s all the more surprising then to hear that she’s naturally a mousy brunette. But you’ll have to go far back in the photo albums to find evidence of it.
Kate Winslet Was a Beautiful Brunette
British actress Kate Winslet achieved international stardom after portraying Rose Dawson Calvert in Titanic, in which she played a red-headed society woman on an ill-fated ship. She’s frequently taken on roles of women in a heightened state of anxiety, for which she has been awarded numerous accolades.
Usually, when you think of Kate you picture her with the bright blonde hair she donned in films like The Reader, Divergent, and The Dressmaker. While she was born with light fluffy blonde locks, her hair matured into a much darker shade of brown. She started highlighting it from a young age, however, so photos of her with her real hair color can be hard to come by.
Jennifer Lawrence Has Chestnut Tresses
American actress Jennifer Lawrence hasn’t even turned 30 years old, and she’s already one of the biggest actresses of her generation. Movies she’s been in have accumulated over $6 billion globally, and she has been the highest paid actress several times over the last decade.
We’ve seen her with dark wavy hair in the Hunger Games film series, and as a beachy blonde in the X-Men movies among others. But her real shade is neither one of these extremes – she’s actually a medium chestnut brown. It’s ironic because it’s probably the color we’re least familiar seeing her in.
Nicole Kidman Is a Brassy Babe
Australian-American actress and film producer Nicole Kidman shot to fame in 1989 when she appeared in the psychological thriller Dead Calm. Her Holywood career took off in the 1990s, starring as the lead female protagonist in several productions. Now, she has four Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy’s, and an Academy Award to her name.
Her signature hair color has been a light blonde shade for as long as we can remember. And with naturally fair skin and blue eyes, we don’t find ourselves doubting that it’s her real hair color. But her real hair is a far brassier shade of auburn. It’s also extremely curly, which we think looks great on her.
Ginger Rogers’ Naturally Dusky Curls
American acting, dancing, and singing sensation Ginger Rogers was a glamorous star of the Golden Age of Hollywood. She appeared in nine films with dancer Fred Astaire during the 1930s, after her success in vaudeville performance and theatre. She is definitely an icon of old Hollywood cinema.
She’s best known for her shock of blonde hair, which she grew especially comfortable wearing in her later years. It complements her bright blue eyes, but it isn’t the color she was born with. Her true shade is a much deeper and darker brunette, which people saw little of past her childhood.
Debra Messing Has Vampy Volume
American actress Debra Messing’s breakthrough came in the NBC sitcom Will & Grace, in which she starred as interior designer Grace Adler opposite Eric McCormack. She’s appeared in films too, such as Garfield and Along Came Polly, but her critically acclaimed TV work is what she’s best known for.
Who could forget Grace Adler’s big red curls that made up such a large part of her identity? She’s also donned ginger hair in other film and TV productions, and usually sports a darker shade of red when she’s off screen. But it’s just smoke and mirrors – she’s naturally such a dark brunette that her hair color looks black.
Cassandra Peterson’s Scarlett Strands
American actress, writer, and singer Cassandra Peterson AKA Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is most popular for portraying the infamous horror show hostess. Her fascination with horror started in her youth and led to her presenting her very own show in the 1980s, Elvira’s Movie Macabre.
Elvira’s signature look was her long straight black hair with a high barnet, revealing low-cut dress, and gothic makeup. Who would have thought that she was actually a natural redhead! She’s only dyed it once before as a teenager, but it didn’t go down so well. She told Vulture magazine: “I did dye my hair black, and oh my God, I got in such trouble with my mom. I just stuck to the red from there on out.”
Lady Gaga’s Dark Brown Barnet
American singer, songwriter, and record producer Lady Gaga rose to international fame in 2008 after she released her debut studio album The Fame. She has a reputation for reinventing her music and her style, often opting for the Avante Garde or eccentric.
Her hair has undergone some pretty extreme transformations over the years, but she always returns to her signature platinum blonde. Her natural shade is actually a dark havanna brown with ashy undertones. In the years before she became a global star she still had those midnight tresses.
Jennifer Lopez Has a Chocolate Mane
American actress and singer Jennifer Lopez is more than just a performer; she’s also a fashion designer, film producer, and overall savvy businesswoman. Not only is she a hugely successful movie actress who has appeared in several box office hits, but her music career has also seen several of her singles appear in the US Billboard Hot 100.
J. Lo’s hair color generally stays within the honey-toned range, sometimes leaning more blonde. But for the longest time, her colorist Tracey Cunningham has been dying her hair to match her “very creamy and golden” complexion to add depth. In reality, her natural hair color is deep chocolate brown.
Alyson Hannigan Is a Deep Mahogany
American actress and television presenter Alyson Hannigan has developed her career around comedy films and TV shows. You’ll often find her acting as the goofy but lovable romantic lead, such as in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother or the American Pie film series.
You’ve probably only seen her rocking her trademark red hair, as she’s donned the fiery color for her most popular performances. It’s not her natural color though – she’s really a mahogany brunette. Ever since she starred as Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she dyed her hair and never looked back.
Allison Williams’ Ash-Brown Origins
American actress Allison Williams rose to fame for her role on the HBO comedy series Girls, in which she played one of the lead actors, Marnie Michaels. She then went on to star in horror movie Get Out in 2017 as Rose Armitage, the girlfriend to the lead character Chris Washington.
Many of Allison’s roles have her sporting a medium brown shade of hair. But she’s turned away from the brunette spectrum in recent years, favoring a sunny blonde in her personal life. You might have forgotten that her real natural hair color is a dark ash-brown.
Madonna’s Ebony Curls
American singer, songwriter, and actress Madonna became a pop music icon in the 1980s, earning her the title of the “Queen of Pop.” She is known for her musical versatility and ability to reinvent herself in both her artistic output and her style. She’s also one of the best-selling female music artists of all time.
For almost all of her long career, she’s worn a golden-hue of blonde as her signature hair color. Her actual natural color is a much darker shade of brown, leaning on the cooler side of the spectrum. Whether she’s a blonde or a brunette, however, we think it compliments her hugely.
Celine Dion Has Chocolate Ringlets
Canadian singing sensation Celine Dion has had a hugely successful career on the back of her unique voice. She is one of the best-selling Canadian artists of all time, having risen to fame in her teenage years. In the 1990s, she became an international superstar.
Celine is known for her varied sense of dress, but her hair isn’t known for undergoing as many transformations. It’s almost always a honeyed shade of blonde with golden undertones. But really, her hair color is much darker. She’s naturally a deep, dark brunette, but you’re unlikely to find her in it.
Britney Spears Is a Bombshell in Brown
American singer, songwriter, and dancer Britney Spears became a pop music icon in the 1990s and early 2000s. Her first two albums, …Baby One More Time and Oops!… I Did It Again shot her into international fame and made her into a teen idol. From it, she earned the moniker, “Princess of Pop.”
Britney’s one of the most famous blonde celebrities in modern times. But it’s nowhere near her actual hair color which is more of a caramel brown. She’s dabbled with darker shades here and there but mainly keeps it a familiar vanilla shade. We love how her brunette hair brings out her big brown eyes.
Emily Ratajkowski Is a Dark Haired Dream
American model and actress Emily Ratajkowski rose to fame after starring in the music video for Robin Thicke’s hit song “Blurred Lines.” Since its 2013 release, her career has only gone from strength to strength. She’s modeling for the top brands, performing in movies, and has become a spokesperson for brands such as DKNY, Kerastase, and Paco Rabanne.
Amidst a national pandemic, Emily felt like changing up her famous glossy brown hair to something new for the summer. She surprised everyone by going blonde for the first time in her life, completely transforming her famed look. Opting for warm yellows to compliment her olive-toned skin, we’ll have to see if it continues to be a mainstay.
Laura Prepon Is an Astonishing Amber
American actress Laura Prepon will be most familiar to us as Alex Vause in the hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black or from movies such as The Girl on the Train and The Hero. But she was also a star in her younger years, appearing as Donna Pinciotti in Fox’s sitcom That ’70s Show.
In all the TV and films we mentioned, she exclusively has black hair. It has been her trademark style for years, which is why you’re likely not to put two and two together in recognizing her as Donna from That ’70s Show. The vibrant orange hair that we saw her in back then is her true shade.
