Taron Egerton has taken on the challenge of portraying the one and only, Elton John in a movie about his life. Rocketman is all people can talk about, especially after Bohemian Rhapsody was such a hit.
The idea of portraying mega-rockstars lives in a movie using their iconic soundtrack is starting to trend, but Tarron feels a lot of pressure. Bohemian Rhapsody did so well and left him with some pretty big shoes to fill.
Egerton Prefers Playing Unattractive Roles
Egerton is from a town in Whales that most people cannot pronounce. His breakthrough role was in the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service. This role was the one that boosted his career and for a few reasons. First, his skills as an actor shined through his performance, but what really got people’s attention were his good looks.
Taron Egerton was added to the list of cute Hollywood actors. From that point on, the actor searched for less charming and attractive roles in movies. “It’s more fun to play things that are ugly,” he told interviewers at Vogue magazine. Egerton took on the role of Eddie the Eagle in 2016. The character he plays is an unfortunate ski jumper who has a protruding underbite. Clearly, the “pretty boy” role is just not for him.
Talking About Elton Johns “Sex Appeal”
Elton John is idolized for far more than his quirky style and outspoken fashion choices. He rose to an outstanding level of fame for many other things including his brave nature, and his undeniable musical talent.
However, Egerton wanted to be sure to also emphasize Elton John’s attractive personality. “I mean, I think he’s got a lot of sex appeal,” Tarron told Vogue magazine. According to him, Elton John has somewhat of a royal presence. He said that going to meet the musician felt as if he were about to meet the Queen of England. The man is so respected across the globe, that it is only natural to feel nervous about seeing him in real life.
His Deepest Fears About Protraying Elton John
Egerton says he is not ready to watch Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s clear that people are expecting a similar “wow factor” from that movie to be present in Rocketman.
The actor stated that Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury was so great that people called it a revelation. Egerton, clearly a humble man, says he is not quite sure that his performance is worthy of the word. The actor thinks that watching Bohemian Rhapsody will only make him more nervous about his performance being squashed by Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury.
Egerton’s deepest fear about the whole project is that he won’t be able to achieve the perfect portrayal of Elton John. The singer went through rough patches which included things like addiction and low points. While those aspects of his story are expected to be included in Rocketman, Tarron fears that they will distract viewers from the inspirational side of Elton’s journey.
Why We Have No Reason to Lower our Expectations
Although he has his doubts, the director of Rocketman seems to think otherwise. “He’s amazing. He’s the most committed, versatile, vulnerable, strong actor that I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with,” Dexter Fletcher told Vogue during a phone interview.
Fletcher’s words surely count for something as he was the director of Bohemian Rhapsody after the initial director was fired. If he’s not having any doubts about Egerton’s performance, then there should be no reason for anyone to lower their expectations about what we’ll see in Rocketman, which opened in theaters this past May.
