We could not be more excited about the news that Friends is finally returning to HBO. All six friends, including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer, have signed up for the unscripted surprise. Regardless of the countless rumors that have been previously shut down by the cast, they have now caught us all off guard with their unbelievably friendly announcements.
Luckily for us, die-hard fans, each one of the friends confirmed our previous suspicions and they did so in the most adorable way. All the cast members have posted an identical photo to their social media feeds with the magical caption confirming, “It’s happening.” While there are still many questions left unanswered, here’s what we know so far.
This Special Episode’s Expectations
Well, sorry to build you up and then disappoint you, but the air date of the reunion hasn’t been announced yet. According to HBO Max, the special is set to launch in May 2020. So sadly, the episode won’t be for at least another few months.
The chief content officer at HBO, Kevin Reilly said in a statement, “Guess you can call this the one where they all reunited and got back together – reuniting with Chandler, Monica, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey for an HBO special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friend’s library.” He went on to say, “It taps into an era when audiences and friends would gather together in real-time, and we think the special reunion might capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans.”
We are happy to report that the reunion episode will also be filmed on the original Friends soundstage, Stage 24 on the Warner Bros Studio lot in California. This is the same stage where the majority of the first 10 seasons were filmed so it sounds like we will be sharing some more quality time on the purple couch in Central Perk.
Are Friends Only Here for One Episode?
As far as we know, the one-off episode is the only thing that has been confirmed. We are all hoping that they will surprise us with a season just like they surprised us with the chapter. The reactions to the social media announcement have been overwhelming. Both fans at home and some of Hollywood’s finest like Reese Witherspoon and Gwyneth Paltrow have commented, sharing their excitement about the cast coming together again. In other words, the hype over this reunion could possibly influence the team to get back together for more episodes!
According to reports, each one of the Friends co-stars will earn at least $2.5 million to make their much-anticipated appearances. So if the hype and demand don’t provide enough incentive for the cast to keep the reunion going, maybe this incredible salary will do the trick.
If the episode has you wanting more, then you might be in luck. It has been widely reported that the TV host Ellen DeGeneres plans to host the cast on her show where she will feature exclusive interviews with the group. This will be the first time the full cast will join together on screen since Friends ended in 2004.
