Home Alone is THE Christmas movie. Sure we go through marathons of all the Christmas specials, but nothing gets us more in the spirit than watching this movie about a kid who’s left alone and takes on two robbers.
Most of the world has seen this movie about a dozen times, however, there are some crazy things that are easy to miss. Here are the wildest Home Alone facts that will make you want to re-watch the movie ASAP.
The Picture Buzz’s Girlfriend is Actually a Picture of the Directors Son
The actor who played Buzz, Devin Ratray, told Yahoo that Columbus thought that using a young girl’s photo as Buzz’s girlfriend was too mean because Kevin sees the picture and implies that she’s unattractive.
That’s why Columbus decided to have the art director’s son play the part. Brilliant thinking!
Not everyone was set on Macaulay playing the role of Kevin:
Hundreds of Kids Auditioned to Play Kevin
The Writer, John Hughes, had experience working with Macaulay in the past. That’s why he was so set on having him play the role of Kevin in “Home Alone.”
However the director, Chris Columbus insisted on auditioning hundreds of kids for the role. In the end, he agreed with Huges.
This character filmed all his scenes in less than a day:
The Polka King Shot All His Scenes in 23 Hours
John Candy played the role of the “Polka King of the Midwest,” in this movie. He got all of his scenes filmed within 23 hours! Because he did all of his work within a short time-frame, he had to improvise a few of his lines.
When he was speaking to Kevin’s mom on the phone, he mentioned being left in a funeral home with a corpse overnight. That little bit was totally made up on the spot!
Kevins epic scream is cooler than you thought:
Kevin’s Iconic Scream Was Accidental
The Iconic Scream Was an Accident: Macaulay was supposed to just put the aftershave on, look in the mirror and scream. But when he put the aftershave on, he kept his hands on his face and continued to scream.
That scene became the cover of the movie. People go up to him today to ask him to take a picture like that.
This is how much the Home Alone house sold for in 2012:
The Home Alone House Became a Tourist Attraction
In the year 2012, the Home Alone House was sold for $1.585 million. The Abendshien family owned the home on 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois when the movie was filmed. Today, the house is a tourist attraction.
People drive up and snap photos in front of it. The current owners put signs up to make it clear that they don’t want anyone stepping on their property.
Guess which actor bit Kevin’s finger:
Joe Pesci Really Bit Culkin’s Finger
Joe Pesci took things too far In this specific scene. Pesci, who plays Harry, actually bit Macaulay’s finger. Culkin says: “In the first Home Alone, they hung me up on a coat hook, and Pesci says, ‘I’m gonna bite all your fingers off, one at a time.’ And during one of the rehearsals, he bit me, and it broke the skin.”
The Goodfellas actor is amusing, but he’s no clown! He’s serious about his role.
This next scene was not fake at all!:
The tarantula on Marv’s face was no fake!
They used a real tarantula in the scene. Daniel Stern told The Hollywood Reporter, “They said, ‘Well, we have a rubber one, but we’ve got the real one, too.’ They told me [the tarantula] was real nice and showed it walking across the trainer’s arm.”
“Everyone seemed cool with it, so I just had them put the friggin’ tarantula on my face.”
No dubbing was used here…it was all natural:
The Scream Was Real Too!
Loud screams in movies are usually dubbed. But, Stern’s scream was totally natural when the directors put that giant spider on his face.
“I asked if that would spook the spider, but I guess tarantulas can’t hear,” Stern said. “Again, I was committed fully to that movie … I wanted to hit a home run in every scene.”
This is how Daniel Stern gave himself a bloody nose:
Stern Got a Bloody Nose from the Doggie Door
He gave himself a bloody nose on the doggie door while filming the movie.”I had to pull my head out quickly, and I clipped my big-a** nose on the door thing,” he said.
In an earlier dog-door scene, you can hear him saying “sh**” under his breath when he loses his shoe through the flap.
This next painful moment made one actor demand he ware rubber feet:
Daniel Stern Opted for Rubber Feet After This Happened
The ornaments Daniel Stern stepped on were made out of candy glass to that he wouldn’t cut himself when he stepped on them.
However, they were still sharp and really hurt the actor. He decided to wear rubber feet to avoid any further injury.
This is why people think Elvis was in the movie:
The Elvis Conspiracy Theories
Was Elvis in the Movie? Elvis passed away by the time this movie was filmed. But conspiracy theorists claim that the bushy-bearded man standing behind Kevin’s mom at the airport is Elvis.
Many people believe Elvis faked his death to escape the overbearing limelight. We’re not sure why he’d show up as an extra in the Home Alone movie.
This on-screen sibling is actually Macaulay’s brother in real life:
Culkin’s Little Brother is in the Movie
Macaulay’s younger brother plays Fuller, the sibling who wets the bed.
After he appeared in this movie, he landed roles in the movies The Cider House Rules, Igby Goes Down, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
Guess how old Macaulay’s stunt double was:
Macaulay Culkin Stunt Double Was 30 Years Old
The young and adventurous character did some pretty dangerous moves. That’s why Culkin needed a stunt double. Oddly enough, his stunt double was a 30-year-old man named Larry Nicholas.
He’s the guy you see falling off of Buzz’s shelves and ziplining to the treehouse.
This scene was filmed in reverse:
The Van Was Filmed Pulling Away from Kevin
Remember the scene when Harry and Marv have to stop short so that they don’t crash into Kevin? The scene was actually shot with the van pulling away from the young actor.
They reversed the recording to make it look like they were backing into him. The producers wanted to make extra sure that Macaulay would not get injured.
Here’s how much the movie made. Hint: it’s a lot!:
Breaking Box Office Records
Home Alone made $285.7 million domestically which is a total record breaker for a family comedy.
It also held the number one spot at the North American box office for 12 weeks in a row.
Blockbuster made the directors of the movie come clean about this:
The Movie Playing Within the Movie Isn’t Real
The movie that Kevin plays loudly to scare away the robbers is not a real movie. The VHS is labeled “Angels With Filthy Souls,” so it seems real. The directors just made up a name to label the VHS.
Video stores received loads of requests to rent the movie “Angels With Filthy Souls,” after Home Alone came out. Blockbuster had a hard time dealing with all the requests for a movie that does not exist.
These scenes were not filmed in a home:
The Scenes in Kevin’s Neighbors House Was Filmed at a School
All the scenes the directors filmed in Kevin’s neighbor’s house were actually shot in a nearby school.
The flooded basement that Kevin runs through was actually built in the school’s swimming pool. The cast also practiced their stunts in the gym.
This massive plot hole has finally been solved:
Plot Hole Solved: Kevin’s Parents Threw Out His Flight Ticket
Some people wonder why the airline did not report any unclaimed tickets at the airport.
However, the true Holiday Movie fans notice that Mr. McAllister throws out Kevin’s ticket while he was cleaning up after the pizza incident.
It’s unexpected, but this country is obsessed with Home Alone:
People in Poland Are Crazy About Home Alone
Home Alone aired in Polish TV every year around Christmas time for decades. The TV channel that owned rights to the movie decided to leave it off of the Christmas marathon list, thinking people would like something different.
The channel got some serious backlash and ended up airing the movie later that year and every Christmas to come.
This Home Alone actress represented the US in the Summer Olympics for this sport:
The Actress Who Played Meghan Went on to be a Judoka
Kevin’s cute sister Megan ditched the whole acting scene and took on a new hobby.
Hillary Wolf focused on her judo skills and even represented the U.S. at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.
Here’s how much Macaulay made in four years:
Culkin Made Enough to Retire Before the Age of Sixteen
Macaulay Culkin made around $20,000,000 before the age of 16. He was only paid $100,000 for Home Alone. Once the movie went viral, Culkin never took less than $1,000,000 per movie.
He acted in 5 movies in the short span of four years. Like all child actors, he didn’t see his money until he was 18-years-old.
There’s something you didn’t notice about the Playboy magazine scene:
The Pages in The Playboy Magazine Were Covered With Blank Pages
When Macaulay started sneaking through his older brother Buzz’s stuff, he found a Playboy magazine.
The directors wanted to keep things PG for the actor, so they taped blank pieces of paper over the actual pictures.
Macaulay was not just a child actor, he was also a professional at this form of art:
Macaulay Was a Professional Ballet Dancer
Macaulay was focusing on his ballet career just as much as he was focusing on his career as an actor.
Culkin spent some time acting in the Nutcracker on Broadway.
Here’s the link between the fall of communism and Home Alone:
Home Alone Was One of the First Western Movies in Poland After Fall of Communism
Another reason why Home Alone is such an important movie for the Polish people is that it was one of the first Western movies to air in Poland after the fall of communism.
The people in Poland got a good taste of the US right off the bat!
Another creepy conspiracy theory:
Another Creepy Conspiracy Theory

According to them, Kevin continued to make boobytraps in houses, but this time, he did it to torture people.
This legendary actor turned down the role of Marv, one of the robbers:
Rober Dinero Turned Down the Role of Marv
Robert is well known for his skills in playing thugs, gangsters, and mobsters.
The directors thought he’d be perfect for the role of one of the robbers, especially alongside Joe Pesci. However, he turned down the job of a lifetime. Anyways, Daniel Stern did an excellent job. We can’t imagine anyone else acting as this character.
The writer of Home Alone wrote these classic home videos as well:
Home Alone is Not the Writer’s Only Hit Movie
The writer is behind some of these unforgettable classics. He wrote The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Uncle Buck.
John Hughes got the inspiration to write home alone when he was filming with Macaulay n the movie uncle buck.
The director worked these epic movies as well:

He’s extremely talented. Everything he touches is gold!
Macaulay can’t escape his role to this day:
Culkin Reprises His Role as Kevin Years Later
Culkin acts in a web series called DRYVRS. In one episode he plays a driver who’s terrible at driving.
He tells the passenger “I still have nightmares about this bald weirdo dude chasing me around talking like Yosemite Sam … They don’t even curse!”
Kevin is secretly not there for certain parts of the movie:
The Director Played Kevin a Few Times
Child labor laws require kids to stop working before 10 p.m. To make sure that the rest of the crew could continue working after 10, the director filmed Kevin’s scenes earlier and then stood in his place while they filmed later on at night.
“We would be shooting from like 5:30 at night to 6 in the morning,” Chris Columbus said.
This is the model on the Playboy magazine:
Erika Eleniak Was on the Model on the Playboy Magazine
You may know this model as Shauni McClain from Baywatch. Erika Eleniak’s Playboy cover happened to be the one see in Home Alone.
Erika was happy about being on the cover of this bigtime magazine, but she had no idea that it would be found in one of the most popular movies of all time!
